tint removal question/concern
tint removal question/concern
I bought my car 2nd hand and i guess the previous owners used a ammonia based cleaner to clean the windows since the tints are now purple. How can i remove them( iw ant to get new ones installed and the local shop is asking as much to remove it as to put new ones on)?
Someone mentioned that I should try it with soap and water...but then wouldnt soap and water drip inside the door ( inside the trim and door?)...
Also, can i damage the rear defroster lines if i remove them improperly?
Thanks in advance

hmm, im not a tint master, but yeah soap and water does help, and i dont think soap and water is going to ruin your interior, if thats what they use to put them on, then you prob already had them dripped on your trim, from previous install. as far as the rear, the defroster lines do get messed up if not removed properly. just try the soap water thing on the back and remove slowly and very little to see if the lines come off or not.
Ottawa ( Canada) is a small place...so everything costs money here...installation was $200 and remova of old tint is roughly $125!!! The guy says its a 2 hour job ( so that means they make 60+ dollars an hour)!!!

I had to remove mine off the front windows to comply with State law and I did it myself with a bottle (the whole bottle) of windex and a razor blade, the razor blade was to get the glue gunk that was left behind. I didn't do the back window though.
i used razor blades and 0000 steel wool, with eagle glass cleaner. the rear was a little harder, cause you don't want to mess with the defogger. take extra care with the rear and it will be fine. i have read that a steamer works wonders, but i did not have access to one. that's why i did it the old fashion way. i used the blades in between the defogger lines, and used the wool with lots of eagle, no problems other than my back pain
to do the back indow. you have a couple options. you can use a wheel acid, but you must work fast and in very small area's and you have to be real careful. or wait until it gets a little warmer outside. take a black trash bag, cut it to the exact shape of your window. then take a spray bottle and spray the tint. put the trash bag over the tint and roll up all of your windows. make sure youre parked in the sun. after a couple of hours the tint and glue will peel right off.

Actually most shops do charge to remove window tint. It takes quite a while to remove it too from my experiece. The best thing to use to remove window tint is adhesive softener. First use a razor and start stripping in the corner of the window and as you peel the tint away slowly spray the adhesive softner between the tint and the glass and wait a minute or two to allow it to soften and it should peel more easily. It also helps to clean up any residue of adhesive on the windows after the tint has been removed completely. You can buy adhesive softener at Wal-Mart in the auto section.
I have done this before .. for the sides use Soap and water...... and a Blade, don't worry about the water getting into the door no harm done..... in the rear well, the deffoger will get damaged if you are not careful, use a hair dryer and pull from the cornes a bit at a time....
good luck
