17 Degree timing adv. Question
Ok, to those of you whom have had your timing advanced, where does the 17 Degrees come from? I ran the other day on the expressway with my Auterra and watched my timing. I ran anywhere from -7 Deg. (start- coast)up to 34 Degrees at WOT. If you advance to 17 Deg, does that mean you can hit say 45 Degrees Advance at WOT? Since the computer is always adjsuting it, I guess my question is what good is the advance?
Thanks.
Thanks.

BTW how do you like the Auterra? Any dislikes with it?

Therefore, you will not see 45 deg WOT but 36 deg. 45 deg is way too advanced. I am not too familiar with the 3.0L and modding it yet so I don't know how you go about advancing the base timing. I am guessing this can only be done by programming/chipping the ECM or adding a piggy-back system. Can anyone enlighten me on this?
I can personally report that the torque and HP increase has done bad things for my tire life...

I figured as much since the system is distributorless. Wouldn't you see more benifits if the EGR system is removed. When I turbo my other car I removed the EGR (had to cause I installed headers) and advanced my base timing 2 deg as well.
BTW I saw a Consult II on ebay a while back and those suckers are quite expensive!

^^^ Only using a consult II.
It's the base ignition, so 15*BTDC is stock. I'm dynoing this on an automatic this weekend. Butt dyno is pretty noticeable, but that doesn't say ANYTHING at all, one thing tht was noticeable was the engine sound has changed.
Basically spark advances to 17* before top dead center, and allows for more complete combustion when high grade fuel is burned.

For every degree, you gain roughly 5hp to the wheels. 2-degrees = 10WHP. It's the best mod you could possibly do to your car. And it's free...I remember feeling the difference as soon as I went back on the highway. I typically floor my car when merging onto highways, so when I floored my car going around 30...I got this insane surge of power that I've never felt before.
To this day I like to feel the advance timing go into work. Best mod ever.

Talk to the service manager, I live in a pretty rural area, so I had my doubts about the delaerships around, and both places I checked would do it, only one does it regularly though, the otehr one I had to explain in a little detail, but as far as finding one, I figure in your area shouldn't be too hard. Or just buy a consult II, probably be worth it in the long run.

lucky.......i'm gunna look into that i gotta get in soon to stealer cuz my driver's window shorted, and keeps blowing the fuse.......which is the same curcuit as the sunroof, power seats, locks, etc, so right now i can't do anything except drive it........well my heated seats still work, i'd be more motivated to get it in if they didn't lol

i literally just had my timing advanced from stock 15 degrees to 17. I had this done with my oil change and i also had them check my throttle position while it was on the machine, came to 42.50 for the timing and throttle...here is what it said on the reciept
customer request
re-set ignition timing to 17 degrees. verify operation of throttle-position sensor.
re-set base ignition timing with "consult". checked specifications on T.P.S. switch. (with normal range)
(note: ecu will alter all engine specifications in accordance with sensor inputs. (including "detonation" sensor which is affected by fuel octane.)
and i knew about the "note" the ecu will know if i start to put ****ty gas in/not 93 and alter the specs.
and looking at the "re-set base ignition timing" i'm hoping they forgot to say 17 degrees, because that's what i asked them to do...anyway my car felt much smoother at idle and felt more responsive especially when i was getting on the highway heading home.

Bob Moore here in Norman wanted 80 bucks to do it. Needlesss to say I told them they were nuts and that it only takes literally 3 minutes to do. So I have decided I am going to give my connection in the service dept at Sewell Infiniti in Dallas a call and see if he will do it for me for cheaper the next time I am down in DFW.

Most service people have no idea what I am talking about. Local Nissan dealer says "we are not allowed to make any unauthorized modification to the car without factory approval". Did he just read that **** out of some book while I was on the phone with him? F@cking ignorant weaklings.

We will see this on Saturday, as I am planning on dynoing but i have a 3.5. 2 degrees is usually the max they recommend. It's hard to swallow the whole 5hp/degree deal, I've read 2 hp/degree but still. Iw ant to see what it does for myslef and ahsre resutls.
