Putting a navigation system in a non-nav car?

OK, this is probably a lot more hassle then it's worth but I thought I'd ask. I guy I know totaled his 2003 Max and bought it back from the insurance company to part out. Another frined can get the nav unit from him for $50. What I was wondering is how hard would this be for us to put into his non nav 2003 Max? I assume we'd need the center stack unit too. What about the GPS antenna; how is that wired in? I know the angular sensor (gyro) is included in the navigation unit but I assume the GPS antenna is an external unit. Finally, what about the wiring of everything? I haven't looked at the back of the units but I suspect the nav unit had special wiring that would require us to tear apart the dash, and other places, to install the nav unit.

Since you got the doner car, just swap it all out...

That's what we're planning on doing, I am just wondering what parts we need, where they are, and how extensive the wiring job would be.

I'm sure it wouldn't exactly be a cake job...does this person already have auto A/C?? If not, you need those sensors and all and you'll have to wire it all separate...also you'll have to install the stock bose tape player, or an AM HU in place of the A/C unit because that's already built into the nav unit. Like i said, it isn't going to be an easy job, and it should be done by someone who knows what they're doing...

Yes, he has auto A/C and he now said he's going to have it done at a shop. He's just wondering what is involved. Where is the GPS antenna located?

ask Don (pearl96max) on the audio forums, he might know about this better than us.

someone tried that before. It was complicated and def not worth it. Better off buying aftermarket unit w/ GPS.
