Calling all 5-SPEED owners...

A fellow 2000 Maxima owner I'm good friends with was just told by a local mechanic that he needs to replace/rebuild his 5-speed transmission, after noticing some leaking tranny fluid.....The Max has 107,000 miles.

I know the automatic transmission is junk, mine pisses me off....but the 5-speed is vulnerable also?

Any of you guys have experience or thoughts on replacing/rebuilding your 5th gen 5-speed transmission?

yea seriously. He's gone beyond what any shmo mechanic may know. Probably tell u what gears are broken by the sounds of the shifts on the phone lol.

i think u may have a bearing issue? I've never heard of anything happening to 5 speed trannies besides bearing issues (normally leading to leaking) and gear breaking....and gear breaking i dont think causes leaking issues....

Thanks for the info guys.....I always thought all the problems were with the automatic transmissions.

Any TSB's on the 5 speed transmission?

I just spent $750 replacing the carrier inside my transmission. I originally thought it was just the driveshaft seal, but it turned out to be the ball bearings inside the carrier. They had worn and chipped causing a leak.

how many miles u had on your tranny? any reason u can see yours would malfunction? boosted? beating on it? I thought 5th gen manual trannies were basically problem proof provided they didnt go through serious hardship....

I destroyed my 4th gear at 65K miles while accelerating hard in 4th gear. Just felt like the gear poped out. Where is the tranny leaking from ? Diff seal ? if thats the case you just need bout 100 dollars worth of bearings and like 5 hours of labor to fix it all. Reason you get leaks out of the diff seals is cause of differential "walking" inside (called DIFF WALK) which shakes/vibrates the axles up and down side to side as you accelerate and causes diff seals to get worn out. Some cars when they experience diff walk you will feel the car vibrate when accelerating and making a slight turn- diff tries to do its job by spiliting the power to each wheel and puts stress on the worn out bearings causing a nasty vibration felt in the steering wheel and floorboard/pedals.

I rebuild my own trannies, ASE manual tranny certified.

If you have a leak "through case" then all you need is pop the case off, and reseal it with new sealant. It will be good as new.

Sounds like the bearings. I had my bearings in my 5spd go out at 59k miles and got a new tranny replaced under warranty.
