Ignition Coil Issues

Well, haven't even put 3,000 miles on my 2000 maxima and ignition coils have gone, all 6 and fouled the plugs according to my local dealer. What fun. Sucks cuz the car only has 48,700 miles on it......I've purchased a new set off ebay for about 282 and will be putting them in myself needless to say. Where are the back 3, I know the fronts are under the cover....I only got a second to look for them before I went back to work...any tips would be appreciated.

Search around the forum with Google and you should be able to find tips and pictures, but it suffices to follow the wires to the obvious location and look around. The only gotcha I ran into is to make sure you don't drop the bolts that hold the rear ones in -- I slipped on one, never found it and had to replace it.

I have a 2000 that had slight pinging problems under load for the past 10k miles or so with the previous owner (in family), but wasn't ever driven hard to hear them except when flooring it up a hill. I did all six coils recently and just got through running 3 gallons of regular through it and the problem is definitely gone, though I'll be using the recommended fuel in regular usage. It's currently at 93k miles.

yea, i wish i only had a pinging problem...service light came on...sounded like the car was running under water, was told all 6 had gone bad and had fouled out all of the plugs

you had better check the part number of the ones you are planning to buy off ebay. if they are not the updated coils then you could be in the same boat in the not so distant future. it is also high unlikely that all fouled at the same time. i would ask for proof such as seeing the condition of the plugs itself. if they are all fouled then it should be obvious. what type of plugs were in there?

It's not really that hard. Obviously, the fronts are a piece of cake. When you do the fronts, you don't have to unclip the wire from the coil. But, practice unclipping them anyway. This way when you get to the back ones, you'll know how to do it. Taking the one in the rear out, is MUCH easier when you unclip the wire first.

As far as finding them, if you follow you throttle linkage to the back center of the engine bay, you will see that there is a clip to hold it in place. If you look directly under that clip, you will see 3 evenly spaced green clips. Those are the rear coils.

Consider getting a metal retrieving rod before you start this project. There is a decent chance that you will drop the screw that holds the coil in place, and it's a bear to get back out with a standard grabber-type retriever.

edit: I almost forgot. To make the rear-right coil easier to remove, loosen the throttle linkage from the clip, and move it to the side. It will make the rear MUCH easier to work with.

preciate it....i'm going to be doing it myself so I'll see what kind of condition the plugs are in...they are factory NGK laser platinums the part numbers for the ones off ebay are 22448-2Y000 and 22448-2Y005 which is what the dealer said I needed. those are the updated ones i am sure.

those are the old part numbers. go on jerryromenissan.com or any nissan site that lists part number and check it out. they should end in 22448-2Y001 and 22448-2Y006. those are the updated part numbers that i have on my 01 and to my knowledge there are no differences between our coils since the motor is the same.

actually, just looked em up and that is the part number given from that website....i think there's supposed to be some gray dot on the part to signify the new model, rather than the old....i hope so at least....

guess 01 and 00 do have different coil numbers. the grey dot is not always there which is why it is best to go by the part numbers.

i changed all my spark plugs which includes taking the coils out. the fron is a piece of cake. the back 3 are located pretty much the furthest back in the engine bay kinda of at an angle facing toward the windshield. be careful with them because i broke on the bolts that holds the ignition coil in in half and we coulsdn't get it out.

is it an actual bolt that holds the coils in place or a phillips screw? What size allan wrench to take the cover off to reveal the front coils? I don't have any of my tools so I have to go buy stuff....all of my tools are at home, I've got a plug socket, wrench, and extension.....any other particular tools i will need?

its a bolt. 10mm head. not sure on the allan wrench because i had the 20th anniversary cover and it did have the cover. make sure the extension is at least 6". you can go to sprintmax.com under how tos for a good breakdown with pics. it is for a 4th gen but the process is identical.

And since you don't have any allen wrenches now, just go buy a set of them. You could even go to a bicycle shop and get an allen wrench tool with 8-9 different sizes.

make sure the extension is at least 6".
if you are going to change the plugs at the same time, you'll need a way longer extension than that. But, for the coils, that should work. Although, it would be easier with a longer extension.

Close, but not identical. There is no no need to remove 2 screws to get to the rear drivers side coil pack. But, it is much easier to remove if you loosen the throttle linkage and move it to the side. Other than that, it's the same.
