Need confirmation of timing advance in Canadian 02max
I just got my car back from the dealer after an MAF ecu flash (which is free for any canadian Maxima under 8 yrs and 100,000km) after upgrading your MAF.
Also note for all canadians, the 2k1 MAF is $600 in canada, the same as the upgraded AM600 2k2 sensor, but the 2k1 MAF is available delivered to canada for about $120 canadian from the US. I did it and it works fine.
While at the dealership I asked to have my timing advanced to 17 (+2) degrees.
The offical word was that this was not possible from the tech, after having my car go to the shop. The service desk made no complaints when I booked the car.
The tech said he could only advance the timing for testing purposes, but not where he could make the change stick. He started to get really pissed when I asked if I should dl the instructions off the internet for him. He said all the US guys must have aftermarket ECU's
Can someone please confirm that you can advance timing on a canadian 2k2 or 2k3?

the ecu is not different. i am sure there are package differences but the ecu is not going to be any different. the main objection from techs that do not know what they are doing is that the timing will not stick. it will stick, even after disconnecting the battery or even the 2k2/k3 ecu reset. it will on revert back to stock timing when the consult 2 is rehooked up and the timing is then set back to 14-15 btdc. i understand the techs frustration though. dont you hate it when you dont know what you what you are talking about and someone else does?

yes it is...i have a canadian max and the tech has set it and i have had it checked several times to ensure it is still advanced...the tech is not very knowlegable. the consult 2 will not allow any more than 17total degrees...usually only plus two if you're at 15 degrees advance. mine was at 14 degrees, so they were able to take it up 3 degrees...to 17.
by the way, thanks for the info on the warranty. I was not aware of that. i wonder if i have to take it to a canadian nissan dealer for that. the local dealer will not cover anything after the 3/60 US warranty. could use my evap canister and controll valve replace under warranty

How the hell do I tell what he left it at. Right now it feels like it may have been retarded, if anything. Can a OBDII scan tool do it? Right now all I own is a code reader, not a scanner (I think that sort of thing exists)

There is no difference between a Canadian spec Max and a US spec Max other than the speedo, odo, ACC, ambient temp display and trip computer reading in metric. There is no way to advance the timing yourself or check to see what it is currently set at. It must be done with the Consult II tool that your dealer has.
I forgot the DRLs. One thing, don't be surprised if they try to charge you an hour for upgrade, even though it will take 10 min.
