Some guy with a 99 I30 claims I hit him from the rear with my 2K GLE and caused his 99 I30 $800 worth of damage to the rear of his car. My car has $0 damage. Does anyone think this is posible to damage one car to this extent and none to the other?

Did you hit him? I'm kind of unsure of this

well i got rearended awhile ago and my bumper was not in good shape underneath. but the guy who hit me was crumpled up pretty visibly (Taurus) they're reputed for bumpers...
though i would assume its possible...i'm sure someone here in the forum is engineering/science background and can give a technical explanation.

I did not hit him. I just find it hard to believe that a bumper from an I30 would be that much weaker than one from a Max. They are basically the same car! The bumpers should be the same under the skin.

Just trying to piece this together...cause if you didn't hit him what's the bit about $800 bucks of damage in relation to you?
there are a lot of factors like speed of impact, angle, etc.
not an expert on this so your guess is as good as mine.

Well, the front of all modern cars have crumple zones, meaning that it's designed to crumple upon impact. Basically the crumpling absorbs energy that would otherwise be transferred to the passengers... so it's a safety thing. That's why in a rear end collision, the one who did the rear ending gets the brunt of the damage.

800 is a little steep...

I got hit by a 70's suburban with a trailer on 95 and the dealer gave me a quote of 700, for a slightly deformed bumper and fender panels, and a scratch on the bumper.

Ofcourse getting a quote from the dealer is always the most expensive quote you get...

doesnt it also matter like if during the impact the guy infront of you is braking or not? i dunno... but he might take you to court... I am in the same situation right now except that someone hit me...

If you're referring to the amount of damage sustained... then yes. If you're talking about liability, then no.
