does your stock speedo go up to 140mph, or 160mph? I know that the 2002-2003's have a 160mph, but not sure about the 2000-2001's. the reason I ask, is because if your factory gauges go up to 160, and you replace it with a 140mph, your speed will be all fuced up. just a thought metal.

Yeah, my 2k goes up to 160 as well. Are you planning on re-calibrating the needles metal?

you can't. look at the diffrence from the 140 to the 160 gauges, you will understand why.

OMG, I hate my life. I'll find a way around it....or else. I'll just have to do some mental scaling...although I am very much looking forward to doing "100" in a 65 zone... Should make for some interesting rides to scare the g/f.

Haha, thanks, man...truth is, I don't want to put her in the running until next summer when I finish the remaining interior projects, which include:

- Glassing the dvd player into the glovebox
- Front wheel well deadening
- Control panel in sulnglasses holder
- Complete fiberglassing of trunk

...THEN, I think I will see if I can enter the annals of the legends.

Hey Metal,

Are you just trying to get your guages to be black and white like the rest of your interior? If so, you might want to look into a 00-01 I30 guage cluster. My guages are all bright white along with the needles. The plastic window is also tinted giving it a really clean look while on or off.

Just an idea, if this is in fact what you are going for. It may be a direct swap as well. I know people have put an 02-03 I35 cluster in an 00-01 I30, and it was straight plug and play.

Slugging along...we see the 4 194 bulbs installed. Polarg, of course, since they undoubtedly give off the most light of any 194/LED bulb I have played with, and I've played with just about all of them.

Cleanliness is next to godliness when it comes to soldering.

Now I am attaching a blue light to color the backside of the needles. The LEDs have a 560-micro ohm resistor attached to each line, then each leads shrink-tube wrapped for an insulated line.

...so here's how the 4 LEDs look attached to the base of each respective needle base.

I attached each of the LEDs using a wire-tie and have the beam aimed at the needle base.

Lastly, here are the connectors I will be using to splice into the OEM wires...as you can see, this will allow me to switch between either my 5th gen or 4th gen cluster with ease.

...then I had to strip all 30-some wires, crimp the connector, then solder the wire. THIS SUCKED.

...alright, that's it for now...more pics and updates as things carry on!

Well, with those lights, you need to remove the OEM ligt, and simply solder a gegular LED into the OEM bayonet housing...then what you need to do is solder a resistor on the (-) side of the led, then simply screw it in...not too tough, I may get a how-to up on this when I go back and redo mine again.

Yep! You will see on the bayonet connector that there are two little metal contact points that make contact with the PCB. When you screw it in, these points touch. SO, what you need to do, is solder the LED such that the LED pos and neg touch these points on the bayonet connector, screw in, and viola, you're done!!!

5mm LEDs + 560 micro-ohm resistors FTW!

hey metal, how does the cluster look when you just replace the bulbs with either LED's or the polarg? I am wondering because i hate the stock green color but i dont want to have to pull apart the gauges and sand anything. I am really not comfortable with pulling the needles off and taking it apart. But I have done the LED's in my climate control so i have no problem replacin the bulbs. I also have chrome gauge rings on the way so I have to pull it apart sometime.

Beautiful car...I just have a couple of questions. What do you do for a living, and where did you elarn to do all this stuff? Is it trial and error or do you know someone that deals with electrical and fiberglass and everything. I would like to start customizing my car. But I wouldent have any idea how or where to start. If there is aother site or something that has d-i-y car projects that can get me familiar with fiberglassing and installing legs I would apreciate it. Once again very nice job with your car.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering...and yes, all of this weas basically trial and error. As an engineer, I guess the only difference is that I guess I am somewhat more methodical in my modus operandi, but that's about it. Believe you me, I must have wasted +$300 on materials before I got some of this to work.

so when you wire the LED's in a series along the board...how do you know which side of the dome lamp ends are + and -. Does it matter? Whenever you put the dome bulb in it never matters so is it the same with the + and - of the LED's?
