Check under the vehicle for exhaust leaks, tighten bolts etc . Common sense before running out and buying something that you're not sure is at fault.

Also, midas and all other muffler shops have replacements for mufflers, so what their book 'calls for' is still not up to OEM standards, only theirs ..

Check ebay for 2k+ mufflers for ~ 60$ ...

I have a 2002 SE and was just told by Midas that I needed a new muffler to fix a small leek at the flange that joins the centre pipe to the muffler pipe that goes in to the actual muffler. They wanted $380 (CDN) to replace the muffler. However, my actual muffler looked good and is stainless steel from the factory (as yours should have been) so I got another opinion from an exhaust repair shop that said the flange where I had the leak is a common weak spot on the Maxima as, for some strange reason, it is made of normal steel prone to rust as opposed to the rest of the exhaust system which is stainless. The long and short of it is he cut out the flange and welded a stainless steel sleeve between the two stainless pipes and said the exhaust (including the muffler) should last many, many more years since it is all now stainless steel. It also only cost $55 for the repair.
