Yes it could. Pull your codes and find out.

esm states a bad knock sensor will not trip cel. typically the cel will go off but the code will not reference the knock sensor. this is why it is known as a ghost code. best way to see if it is working is monitor your timing.

p0327 and p0328 are knock sensor codes. ECM will store a code but the MIL will not be turned on.

no code and a bad knock sensor...that's what happened to me...such a crappy performance with a bad knock sensor..I enjoy it since it's new...better low rpm power...

.... KS is located on top of the block, under the IM ... looks easier to reach as compared to a 4g.

I'd like to know too. My 1700-2000rpm knock has gotten significantly worse lately and when I had my car in for tranny fluid change they couldn't replicate it. It was raining and I couldn't replicate it either for the previous 3 days. As soon as the sun came out the knock was back. I think I just couldn't hear it during the rain. Thought it was a couple of tanks of bad gas..now I think it can't be.

What's the best price anyone has seen on a new sensor?

JRNissan wants $142 with free shipping. Lot to pay unless you know yours has gone bad.

when you hear the knock, you look down and ck the RPM...

after 5 or 10 times you get an idea of when it happens most, and thats your range...

Yup. There are/were several threads on the 1700-2000rpm knock.

Wow! I hope mine doesn't go bad. Since owning a '95 before I got rid of it, I now scan my ECU for "ghost" codes (such as knock sensor) every once in a while. The knock sensor was a PIA to replace in the 4th gener's. I hope I don't have to replace one in my '00 SE anytime soon! So far, so good.

...has anyone on this thread replaced a KS on a 5th gen Maxima? I found pictures of KS location and replacement instructions on the 4th Gen thread but nothing on 5th Gen. I read previously that it's located under the IM but I can't see mine ... just wondering if the IM has to come off ... thx in advance.

I'm not sure who has, but the 5th gener knock sensors are not proned to go bad as compared to the 4th gener's. I replaced one in my '95 which was a PIA. You won't know if it's bad unless you run a scan on your ECU with an OBII scan tool, since the sensor is a "ghost code".

the ones on the 4th gens tend to crack or split near the edges and eventually down the middle due to the high heat of where it sits in our engine bay (wedged between the V portion of our block and blocked by a IM)

I think 5th gens may have this problem also, but it just hasn't been widely apparent yet.

Yay! for bringing an almost 5 year old post back from the grave.

Question: Where do I find the knock sensor? Can anyone post a pic or diagram? I know exactly what it looks like, but I must be blind because I don't see it. (2002 i35)

Not as easy as it looks apparently. Does getting to the sensor require removal of the intake manifold?

No. But if you take off the upper AND lower manifold it'd be super easy.

Grab a long extension & u-joint & be done:

Anybody actually replace the KS after having the "knock" and have it resolve the issue???

I'm hoping this could be the end of this stupid issue!!

What do you mean "grounded it to the battery tray"?
Grounded what?
Why?
