Alternator job

$325 for an alternator job...sound right?

do it yourself. it is simple but you have to get the ac compressor out of the way to get the alternator out.

I paid $210 for alternater and labor. The mechanic however never had to remove the fan to do the job.

because there is no point of removing the fans. alternator on maximas are above the ac. the only way to remove them is by removing the ac out of the way and taking the alternator out the throught the bottom. it will never come out through the top.

Most alternators can be REBUILT for less than 1/2 the cost of a new unit.
If you do the removal yourself, which shouldn't be too difficult - you can take the unit to a rebuild shop and have them gut it for much less $$$.

I've never done this with a Max alt., but shouldn't be rocket science -- they're pretty much all the same.

The battery light stopped coming on so I'm not going to worry about it. The car starts and runs fine.

the battery light will go on and off many times before it finally stays on for good. Sometimes the alternator is good but the wiring to it may be all fried causing that light to turn on and off.
