I'm replacing a rearview mirror w/o compass with a rearview mirror w/compass on an 03 Maxima. The original mirror has auto dim but no compass. The new one has autodim and compass. I think the compass also tells temperature in the car. Is this a direct swap w/o the need for rewiring? I'm hoping I can just unplug one and replug the other. It looks like there is only a positive and negative wire going in on both.

I found a couple of these mirrors at a junkyard. PM me if you're interested in my spare.

I'm also intrested in doing this swap. I'm not sure about the wiring though. Are the plugs on both mirrors the same? If so and the number and color of wires are the same on both cars, then it should be a easy swap. I don't know though, I haven't done it yet.

The OEM mirror with compass displays temperature as well?? I have that mirror and I don't think it does.

The autodim mirrors only have a connection for power and ground. If it has the compass function, wiring is the same because the compass is built into the mirror when powered. As far as the temp. readout, you must have a temp. probe/sensor wire to tap into. As far as our Max's go, anyone with auto climate control has this wire (Ambient wire). The sensor is located outside the car, underneath the front grill. You might want to get a wire diagram for the exact wire color for power. I don't believe the rear view mirrors are a direct swap, because I don't think they are pre-wired if your car didn't happen to come with one. Mine wasn't and I had to run wires up to the mirror when I upgraded mine.

my compass has the F for farenheight and the small circle, it shows when i start to mess with it. but it doesnt work, i looked in the manual but nothing about temp.

i don't think there's a temp function on those mirrors. i would love to do that swap though. where did you get the new mirror with the compass function??

Nope. No temp function in the autodim/compass mirror. If you're getting a F and degree symbol it may be that Nissan, when buying the LED component, sourced out a generic display unit which might include those symbols. Buy there's no temp built into the mirror logic. I get ouside temp off the trip computer system. Inside temperature, I can set the climate control, but there's no feedback as to what the actual temperature is.

Good news. I believe the autodim/compass mirror is plug-n-play complatible with the autodim mirror. The compass fluxgate is inside the mirror and is powered from the same spot autodim is. Haven't done the swap myself but my '03 has the compass and my girlfriend's '02 does not. Was thinking about upgrading hers and compared our connectors. They look the same.

look in the manual. you have to set your location by driving in a cirle 15 times or something, or doing special programming to offset the degrees from greenwich time.

Is there a way to tell just by looking without power applied if it has the compass? Ya know, just in case I find one at the junk yard I don't want to be buying one that I already have.

I did the swap, as txt-1 said, they were standard on 03 titanium's.
It is a plug and play with an 02 with just autodim.
However the temp doesn't work on the mirror because no probe wire is run up there.
I have auto climate, but to me, its not worth the trouble of running the wire to the mirror seeing as I already have a temp display in the instrument cluster...

I got it from car-part.com, it was like $50 bucks or something.

my mirror doesn't have any temp display. I have an 03 titanium edition. just dims and has a compass.......to be honest i never use the dimming feature, but i love the compass!!!!!!

all u fancy 02-03 guys, my 00 has nothign there so id have to wire everythign manually, which isnt a big deal, is the temp inside or outside, and can that be hooked up to the 00 auto climate control?

look on ebay, also look into Toyota Camry mirrors, mine is from an 01 and looks the same and was a perfect fit and plugged right in

I don't think any of the 5th gener's came with a temp. readout on the rear view mirrors...just ones with or without autodim, and ones with autodim and compass. The ones with temp. readout are all aftermarket. You can find these on Ebay. Plenty of sellers sell these, but some are quite pricey. The 2k2- and 2k3's have the temp. readout in the guage cluster. Now, if you would happen to buy one aftermarket with the temp. display, all you have to do is tap into the ambient wire in the auto climate control A/C unit to read the temp (outside temp.) As far as the autodim function, all is needed is power and ground. It switches on automatically everytime you start the car (controlled by ignition). Now, you can bypass this function by switching it on/off manually by a switch, but if you power it by an unswitched 12V source, you may forget to turn it off when ignition is off, and possibly drain your battery. Now, my 2K SE didn't come with an autodim, but I did find one on Ebay and was really simple to wire up. I've been wanting the temp. and compass as well, but it seems that these mirrors are very popular because these people bid like crazy on these type of mirrors...in the $150+ range!

I got mine from a junkyard. I think they both came from gray 03s. I paid $45 each. You can tell the mirror has a compass because there is a little black rectangle in the miror to the right of center.

I'm going to do the swap this weekend. I'll post any problems. I don't expect any though. Thanks for the info on the temp display.

Put the mirror in an 03 maxima this weekend. It was a very simple swap, one screw and unplug then plug the wiring. No problems. The compass works well with no need to do anything else. There is no temp display. All in all, it was a simple and worthwhile upgrade.

Damn straight! Wheelie helped me put the mirror in and it rocks! It took us all of 10 minutes to put in. The damn thing cost somewhere around $170 new, so for $55 it's an awesome upgrade.

i bought the autodim with compass. the harness coming out of the mirror has three wires. chocolate, black and green. black = gound, whats the green and chocolate one for???

also what did you guys use for the power one?

It was plug & play. I disconnected the stock mirror and connected the compass mirror. The connectors are identical. I'm not sure which wire does what. I guess a volt meter would tell you.
