2K1SE stalls all of a sudden
I needed to pickup my daughter tonight downtown.
Drove down ~ 15 miles of Hwy and city...no problems.
Parked and met her and were back to the car in 2 minutes.
Went to start the car and it would immediatly stall.
Was able to get home by keeping the RPM's above 1k...shifting to neutral at stops.
It was tricky at a few intersections and especially trying to get out of the parallel parking spot!
Any thoughts....
The car lit the SES about a month ago - went away after a few starts.
There were occasions where I thought I felt a miss or dip in power.
Gas milage seems about normal.
The car just turned over 80k.
Is this a dead MAS?
Other thoughts???
I want some knowlege before I goto the stealer....
Thanks in advance.

Looks like a blown MAF

No Codes....
The nearest place where I can get the codes dumped is a 25 mile round trip....I'm not ready to try that with the current idle issues...
I called Dave today and ordered a new MAF and spark plugs.
FedEx should have them here tomorrow.
Hopefully this is the cure.
Thanks to all for your diagnostic help.

Back together...waiting to test
Well, the new MAF is in, but can't test.
The K&N was pretty dirty, so I cleaned it - waiting for it to dry.
I was tempted to swap the sensor in the tube, but the paper in the box with the part said no to this multiple times...so I swapped the part.
The replacement was a ***** since the screws to the airbox were frozen.
Also, the rubber gasket to the little box on the motor side was really stuck.
I ended up pulling intake, airbox, MAF and the little box on the motor side of the MAF.
Even on the bench, seperating the parts was hard.
Once seperated, I cleaned everything, replaced the MAF and re-assembled.
Installation went pretty smoothly, only one hose not dressed correctly, but i was able to fix that.
The battery cable is off, the filter is drying with a fan blowing on it.
I've got to be at work early tomorrow, so that is not the time for testing.
I'll finish it up tomorrow night.
Stay tuned....thanks.

both.
because a small amount of air is set to go by the throttle plate, and the IACV supplements this based on engine strategy. if the t/p passage is blocked, it can cause the IACV to go OOR and/or stalling.
no.

No Joy...
Dang,
Swapping the MAF didn't fix the problem.
The car started instantly.
Seemed ok, then idle went high - about 1.5k.
After second start, the SES light came on.
After a couple of short drives, the idle started to drop.
Soon it was back to stalling at idle.
Guess the Idle valve is next....or a trip to the stealer....nuts.

I had something similar happen to my 01 Max SE. It stalled while I was at the car wash, I got it jumped. I made a stop on the way home, and while I was in the car the electrical system momemtarily stalled and them came back up when I pressed the gas. I found out that the battery needed to be replaced. My suggestion is to replace the battery before you take it in to have the codes checked.

battery wont throw a p0505...
though it wouldnt be a bad idea to have it load tested. autozone and places like that will do it for free. dont just go replacing it without being sure that its bad.

Still code's P0505
OK - Swapped the IACV. What a PITA!
Cleaned the TB while I had it out.
Everything went back together nice.
Seems to run well.
Took for a quick 3 mile spin and was fine....Idle in the ~800RPM in gear after warm.
Stopped & started it about 10 time.
Went for another 1 mile spin.
Started a few more time.
All fine.
Went for a 10 mile run - to the store.
Ran great during run. While idling in the parking lot, the SES light came on.
I had my code reader - still P0505!
Went into the store - came back - ran home just fine.
Several more starts in the garage were fine....but still SES lit.
Will take for another run a bit later tonight.
Do you think this is just because the MAF replacement recommended the ECU be re-flashed - or something else?
What's next...beyond goto the stealer?

I am fighting the same problem, only the cab began to smell like burned electronics. Got the 0505 code also, bought the IACV part for 189 and replaced it, while replacing it I could not remove the connector so I began to pry on it with a screwdriver, well low and behold the coils in the valve control motor were shorted and fused the connector to the housing, somehow moisture got in the coils. If you remove the motor from the IACV housing you may find that it got moisture from somewhere. The car starts fine but now my idle is at about 1500 and goes up and down within 100 to 300 rpms. The car runs just fine at highway speeds, everything works other than the idle. I reset the ecu after the part replacement but the same code came back after a few minutes. I tried the volume air adjustment with no results. I am seriously thinking ECU is cooked......

Interesting - my other post didn't make it....
Ok - did the relearn for the IACV.
I did this yesterday - can't say I noticed a difference.
Today, while doing errands, I noticed the SES light was off.
I came on again about 1 hour later - still sending P0505's.
Will try the re-learn proceedure again.
Then I guess I need to go the dealer and get them to reflash and re-learn.
BTW - where is the idle valve that is used to assist steering?
How can I know it's working ... would steeing be really bad if it failed?
Thanks for the help,
Freda
