and your point is? i drive aggressive but do not do anything that should have caused failure of the trans at 63000 miles.

 

There's agressive, and then there's stupid. Agressive: doing 65 on an exit ramp designed for 30. Stupid: getting off the end of that ram and tossing it into neutral, revving the engine to 6k and pulling it into drive just to see how much smoke you can get to roll out of the wheel wells.

I've never done the latter, by the way.

 

I just purchased an '01 20th and the trans had work done before and just recently got replaced by the dealer I bought it from. How do I know if they put a Limited slip trans back in. The old one (besides shifting harsh from first) has awesome traction and I could feel it work. This "new" used one is a one wheel wonder when one wheel has no traction. Any numbers on the tranny? Can I see the wheels spin same direction when not in gear? Any hints?

Sounds like you have a non LSD tranny to me. Take it back to the stealership and make them prove it to you.

 

I want to but I wondered if anyone had any hard facts on proving it. I was a tech before so I have a good clue but not to familiar with Nissan. No i.d. numbers on the case or any tests besides peeling out in the grass? =)

 

The first Max my wife had was a 2000 GXE that we converted into an SE. Around 60k it had a tranny slipping (a weird feeling), and we brought it in. Long story short, they found a TSB and followed the instructions, putting on a bunch of new parts. Not too long after, it showed the same signs. We brought it in again. This time, they said it was the tranny. Luckily we had the extended warranty. About two months after a rebuilt was put in it, it started showing signs again. So we got rid of it for what she has now...

a 2000 GLE. Fast forward 20k miles (we bought it with 41k), it is now starting to show small, subtle signs of the same thing. I am hoping that it isn't the same thing - although we (again) have the extended warranty.

On a side note, my 2003 SE (TE) has stellar performance and NO problems whatsoever - and I have 42k miles.

Before the Max, I had a Dodge Intrepid (97). It ran like a charm and out of nowhere when it had 102k miles - BAM, the tranny linkage went. Fixed it, then got deployed (around 9/11) - so it sat in storage for a while and was driven once every two weeks. Got back from the deployment, 6k miles later - BAM, the tranny linkage went again. That's when I thought... maybe I will look at a Nissan.

Ask ANYONE who's owned a Chrysler product... their engines are awesome, their trannies are made out of glass.

 

I drive aggressive, at 81k now. But I do notice a weird noise now, I think its some bearing(s) in the trans, but sadly nobody would take my word for it and replace them.

 

So before I go back to the dealer anyone know of anyways to verify my trans does NOT have LSD?

 

5th gen tranny problems have been goin on forever in 5th gens on this forum. I remember the ranting in 2001. My AE went though one after 30k. They tried to say that i was racing because of the suspension i had at the time. But the way we drive the car has a lot to do with it too. Have you ever accelerated and right when it was about to shift, you let go of the gas. Not too good. I went though 3 autos. 2 of which were built. Many of us are just very aggressive drivers. Maxima tranys were ment to drive smooth and soft. Finally, I just did the 5spd swap. I love it.
