Why does my tranny sound like a buzzsaw?

2k1 5 speed- I noticed if i put it in 1st gear slowing down around, say, 15-20 mph and let out the clutch i get a real high pitched buzzing noise(not the engine speed, RPM's go up a second later when the clutch is almost fully out) i dont downshift into 1st all the time, but when I do it sounds a lot louder than it should.

Also i realize its first gear and would make a whirring anyway but its a real loud buzz kind of whirr.... sorry it sounds kind of dumb i have no other way to describe it.. try to post an audio clip if i can get a good one

Thanks

why are you using first to slow down??? You should only use first to start from a dead stop, and many dont even do that; I typically start in second unless I want to accelerate quick.

Crap, it sounds like you grinded gears, i did this at 4th and 5th gear a couple times coz i was stupid. It does sound exactly like a buzzsaw and it virbrates the shifter, if you paid attention. but huh, it doesn't seem like you grinded gears.

P.S. use your BRAKES, that's why they're there for.

It is almost like a grinding sound but 1st is definetly meshing, haha thing is i usually dont use 1st i only did it once a few days ago and heard that and was like wtf?!

Its weird cause i know how a manual transmission basically works, and the sound starts before the engine rpm rises, so im trying to think what is spinning at that speed when the clutch is half-released?

Mine does it too. Especially since I did MT-90 fluid swap. It's funny you post this cause it's been on my mind lately cause it seems louder and the only difference is the temp drop for fall. I downshift to first sometimes to come out of slow tights not for speed reduction. Everybody knows brake pads are cheaper than the alternative. The sound I'm hearing is more like a straight-cut gear racing tranny just alot quieter and it while I'm in gear not shifting to it. So its not the gear grind during shift (sychro's) like previous poster thought.

Yeah, its while in gear- whered you get the MT-90 by the way, and was it a big difference after the fluid change? Guess that rules out my thought that the gearbox oil was causing it

I can't remember but I know the link was from maxima.org I don't think it was a group deal just a recomended Internet site. I think it was like $38 but I could be wrong. As for the difference... I noticed none. My stiff shifting when cold is not something fluid can correct. Definately do it from a reliability stand point. Changing fluid good especially to a quailty lube. The next person who owns car when it has 200,000 plus miles will thanks you.

I would actually recommend using Amsoil gear fluid over MT-90. The MT-90 causes the shifter to feel a bit notchier, ESPECIALLY in colder weather...the Amsoil is smooth all the time. Just my opinion...

There is a gd going on for Amsoil products right now, btw.

no good guess on what the noise is huh? I stopped using first, i only did it before to hear the noise and try to get what it would be- tranny runs fine otherwise except for being notchy when its cold

I believe it's normal - though I don't recommend doing what you're describing all the time. You can trash your tranny / synchros downshifting like that all the time, and it really doesn't do anything for you anyway. I usually start off in 2nd if I'm not to a complete stop.

5 spd 20th Ann. Ed., STB, RSWB, POP charger, Slotted Rotors, Tokico 5 ways, and alotta attitude.

Alotta attitude startin off from second...

If it doesn't grind or have to force it in then how much damage could be being done?

LOL - that's good. I've got 125K on my AE now - I guess the attitude is fadin' a little since it's my only car. I just assumed the other Max trannies were like mine. Can you downshift into 1st at 20 without having to force it? I gotta muscle the c**p outta mine. Never could throw it into first easily like that even when it was brand new.
My only point is this - if you're just slowing down - what good does it do you to downshift in 1st? You've got to slow down another 20 mph until you stop anyway. You know you're working the synchros hard, and jerking the tranny (and bearings) around when you let out the clutch. From my own personal experience with my old Mazda - I used to do that all the time, and paid the price...
That's all I know. Do what you feel is right.
