WHAT DID I DO???? (02 6-speed)

OK this morning I came upon a dream come true.......I'm rolling up to a stoplight, it's 4:30am and the roads are deserted except for the one car already sitting at the light. A white STi. Now, I hold no delusions about being faster than an STi but I always hold out hope about being a better DRIVER. Sure enough I catch him sleeping, or at least thinking he doesn't need to launch hard to beat a lowly Maxima. Wrong. I take first all the way out but I wasn't looking at the tach so I was guessing it was 6 or 6500, in the neighborhood at least. I hear him trying to play catch up, I hear his BOV after 1st......I hit 2nd HARD and my car just DIES! Well, it didn't die but the rpms settled to idle (600-ish) and when I pressed on the throttle it did nothing. Obviously the STi screamed by me as I coasted to the side of the road. My 'Check Engine' light came on also.....bummer. So I turn it off and wait a minute then restart and it seems to be running fine, but the CE light is still on. I drive it all the way to work and park it, go out after and drive home. As I got close to home I ran a HARD 1-2-3 and it ran strong as ever, it didn't miss a beat. So, has anybody ever heard of this happening? Could I have simply over-revved it by not watching my tach and that is what these cars do? I know I could take it in and see what the CE light is about and I probably will but I just thought I'd post here and see if anybody knows. Thanks in advance for any info, I LOVE THIS CAR!

maybe you over revved and the engine check safe device turned on to avoid blowing the engine.. cutting fuel to the engine

but he would be bouncing off the revv limiter for a while for that to happen wouldn't he?

Is check engine light still on? if yes, go and get the codes…

I think everything is fine though, when the rpms were about to start bouncing (fuel was getting cut off) you let off the gas and shifted which probably caused the problem.

Yes. I tested this (in a rental), and if you just keep it floored at redline the engine basically goes wah-wah-wah-wah really fast as it cuts off then turns back on a couple times a second.

Not sure what happened to your car, unless your car recognized an out-of-bounds situation (mix wrong? carbon breaking loose? dunno) and killed off the engine to correct it.

The tachometer is there for a reason. Perhaps you should use it in future.

The wah-wah-wah noise, "cutting out" is your rev-limiter kicking in letting you know you are over revving the engine...They dummy proofed the car so you can not kill it over revving it...Not sure why the car cut-out unless you laid on the limiter that hard that somehow it didn't register properly. You should get the code pulled. Could be an MAF though I'm not really sure.

Hehe....I know I know, I do use it occasionally but I get cocky and lazy at times thinking I know my car SOOOO well.

Thanks for the input guys, I'm going to go get the code pulled on the CE light and see what's up.

Later--

Why didn't the Subaru Gods strike him down??

I just wish the Nissan Gods could've spared me and let me finish my schooling of Mr. STi!! Hey if an STi doesn't get it's usual optimum launch......say instead of a 1.7 or 1.8 60' it gets a 2.3 or 2.4, what do you think it would run in the 1/4? I know they are good for mid-13's so I'm guessing mid-14 maybe? Interesting.

I redlined first one time in my 2k2 automatic with 4 people in the car total against my friend's stock wrx non-STi. He only had 2 people in his car total, and I was a little bit infront of him the whole time. He was DEF trying, I knew him from work.

an STi is going to be impossible to kill, but if he falls behind a little bit in the begining its going to be very hard for him get away from a 6sp.Those things are as good as a porsche. It would be intersting though to see SRDE20's car against an STi though

When this happened to me (it was a corvette in my case), Nissan reported two problems to me: 1) MAF replacement, and 2) Gas Pedal rheostat had to be replaced. I believe it was the gas pedal problem.

You can always run by an auto-zone and pull the codes. That is what I would do next.

well that's not what happens in this car...i was in second getting on the highway, and wasn't really paying attention, and i obviously went over readline at ~62mph....it felt like i hit a brick wall...the car just surged forward and felt as if i were braking, but then i quickly depressed the clutch pedal, and the RPMs settled to idle, and i was able to get it into 4th right away after that....

i don't think that over-revving is what caused the car to do that, because the ECU plays it pretty safe when it comes to that....go get the code pulled, and good luck with whatever happens...
