Cleaing Engine Bay

So i took of my engine cover and it looks disgusting. Like leaves and dust all over the place. I'm wonder is it safe to take a hose to it and just blast all that off. I'm thinking of polishing the manifold too. I want a clean engine bay cuz right now it's just plain dirty. Is there any part of the egine bay i shouldn't get water into? I know the starter and alternator that's about it. read other post about cleaning engine but this one is under the engine cover...looks like lots of wires down there don't know if it'll be harmful in anyway. inputs would be appreciated.

I preffer Castrol Super Clean or Indutrial Purple from Home Depot. They are the exact same thing but the HD stuff is cheaper (sold in gallons). It is more effective that Simple Green from my perspective.
