Dan,

man you should have called me when you thought up this idea, I have a set of GLE tail lights sitting in my garage not doing a damn thing....I recently switched to the SE Tails and couldnt bring myself to throw out my GLEs because I had a nagging feeling that they would come in handy one day, and do you friggin know?....

well if you Fawk up, which is the engineering process, let me know, they're urs to practice on if you need them

Been wanting to do this for the whole year now. Just haven't had the time. Maybe it's a good time to start this project, and offer a little creativity to the org. I'll be in touch with my progress. GL everyone.

in the left '00 tail light the crack is minimal like an inch or two and since its horizontal its hard to notice it unless your eyes are inches from it or you are feeling it with your hands. so someone is donating metal 02/03 tails? macdaddy if you pay for shipping, their yours to experiment with =]

A dremel isnt needed to open the tail lights, you can bake them the same as the headlights. I actually bought a set to make into LEDs a while back but have yet to start it since I quit my job and am running low on cash.

What about the tail lights off an altima those are LED arent they? Can you use some of the hardware from those or no? I know minimal things about electronics just so you know.

You do realize that fomr a logistical vantage, the electrical work that need be done in order for it to operate in the aforementioned fashion would be nothing short of fanatical...

im a little more partial to the red tails myself and especially like the idea of solid red brake/signal light. But either way those would still be clean, I just dont think that anyone who threw down the extra bones for these will sacrifice for the project. Keep the ideas comin though guys.

would you see the led board in the tail light on the turn signal part..it seems that you can look into the turn signal and see the inside back part of the tail (doesnt look like a reflector is there)...i think red would be good though.

I'll be your huckleberry

Question they make LED tails for 4th gens with the circle pattern can you take that design and fit it the 5th gen tails?

like this \/\/\/\/\/\/\/

Circular design...Yes this is possible. The design of our taillight housings already points me in this direction by first glance.
Like those...I don't see this happening due to the housing shape as well. I definetly think you can set it up to have a circular pattern on each side but two on each side is just not really looking pretty in my head.

I personally still really like the idea of doing horizontal rows as orginally stated. But the circular pattern like photoshop'd above is really making an impression on me. Let's see what people come up with before we rip into those nice little tails you payed a pretty penny for as well 2K3MAX2NV. Unless you really are itchin' to send them off. LED's in the mail! Man you guys are definetly motivating me. :

Kevin

edit: photoshop'd on pg. 2

i was going to use those clear ones at first and just stick some kind of relflective material over the board but then i started not to like the whole clear part of it, i just think doing all red brake and signal would look more clean and OEM style

Since you guys have a round portion in the tail light to work with, have you considered something such as the following?

There are LOTS of LED drop-in replacement modules for big rigs, in different colors and sizes. Most already have built-in stop/turn/tail functions as well. Might not be too difficult to cut open the back part of the tail light (holesaw, dremel) and find a way to mount this unit in the round area.

See here: http://www.buytruckstuff.com/s_produ...selcategory=34

There are also lots of other companies that make the modules as well, just see the bar on the left to look at those.

Additionally, I said earlier on in the thread that I had taken a pic of some LED tails for the 5th gen max at SEMA. Well here it is:

http://www.myi35.info/ledtails.jpg (large pic, 56k be warned)

In person they look great. Didn't look much different from 02-03 tails that had painted the turn signal part red. I looked at the part number in the picture and did some googling, and found that that pic that I took above is of the LED tail that has been posted here before that you guys seem to hate. It's also for sale at other places on the web. Something to consider...

now to make a circle led, would you have to break the middle tab that seperates between the tail light and signal light? if you can put a circle in there, i was thinking like have a big ciricle of led on the outer part, and have a smaller circle inside the big circle. like two cirlces, not side by side, but on top of each other. big, then small. kinda like the previous one, but with rings, no dot in the center, like two rows of leds per circle.
