Trunk Issue

Hi Guys,

For some reason the trunk open warning light in my gauge cluster is on. I tried to open and close the trunk but for some reason the light remains on. I also noticed that the light in the trunk is not working. I took the bulb out and looks good. I also checked the fuses and none of them look broken. Does anyone know the exact fuse I should be looking at? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, but I took the bulb out and it doesn't look burnt out.

Reminds me why I didn't buy a GM vehicle... almost every one I see has an electrical issue with lighting somewhere on the car... (not that this is the only problem or the biggest problem with those cars )

Well, checked everything that I could and everything looks in order. Had a buddy check some things with his voltmeter and it looked good. Any other ideas or suggestions?

Bump. Anyone know how the trunk open light in the gauge is triggered? Also, which fuse would be repsonsible for trunk light?

I believe it is either fuse #13 or 14, located by the driver side footwell in the dash. 10-amp fuse.

But if that fuse were out, your keyfob would not be working either...

If you look inside the spot where the latch goes into (car side, as oposed to trunk lid) there is a black square trigger which when depressed tells the car that the trunk is closed. You can see the light turn on and off when you depress it with your finger. I dont have my multimeter on me so I'm not sure if it is a positive or negative trigger but I would guess negative (completes circuit by grounding when triggered) if I had to, seeing as this is the most common. Also if you need me to take a picture of what I'm talkin about just let me know. I'll be more than happy to help.

Kevin,

Thanks for the info. I was able to locate the trigger on the trunk side. When I depress it the trunk light in the gauge cluster doesn't shut off and the light in the trunk is still out. Any other ideas?

You might want to check depressing the trigger I already told you about if you didn't already. I don't know that there is a trigger on the trunk side. There is a latch but my inspection revealed no trigger. I'm not saying that there isn't one on your car but I might have missed it on mine. Either way I know that the trigger on the car side is the one that tells the car what is going on. Try that...let me know.

Kevin,

I took a look again and the trigger looks good. I'm able to depress it and it looks to be mechanically working. Any other suggestions? Thanks

When you say that it "looks to be mechanically working" do you mean that the switch depress without obstruction (that it just works as far as moving up and down), or that you tested the trigger and it recieves signal when depressed, or do you mean that the light in the trunk comes on and off while toggling the trigger. There are still many factors that can come in to play here. Although if the switch is depressing I highly doubt that there is a problem recieving signal on this side of the circuit. Also what specifically did your buddy check with his meter. I would test these things first in this order:

1. Check bulb
2. Check voltage in bulb harness
a. if no voltage or partial voltage check related fuses
b. Check continuity in lines for wires grounding out at all
3. Visually see if depressing trigger changes anything (light come on?)
a. if no changes test to see if it is pos. or neg. trigger
b. test to see that wires recieve signal from depressing trigger
4. Pull out gauge cluster and test wires for what is recieving power.
a. trace these lines back to fuse panel, relay box, BCM, etc.
b. find lines that feed into the box (wires on the trigger side) and test to see that those are recieving power all the time
5. If everything checks out...find hammer and repeatedly beat cluster before replacing in dash. Or you can disconnect your status light.
