New MAF, any diff with ECU reprogrammed?

I am trying to find out if reprogramming the ecu after installing a new MAF is really necessary. Those who had the new MAF installed and driven with it for a while prior to getting ECU reprogrammed, could you tell if there was any difference after you had the ECU reprogrammed ?

MAF Sensor question

Greetings,

I am new to this site as I recently purchased a 2000 Maxima GLE with 84,000 and change miles. The SES light came on about 1 week ago and it has been diagnosed via the on-board computer as a problem with the MAF sensor. I am not tech savy and would like a bit of info from you or any other members regarding this issue. From what I have read online, this is a common problem with this model year. I am unable to post new threads, so I had to borrow off of this one; I apologize for any inconvenience. Assistance can sent via e-mail to gtana29@yahoo.com . Thanks to all members who can provide me any assistance.

Sincerely,
Gus

i know a few people have had the updated flash from the consult per the tsb. i replaced mine without the update and almost perfect a/f until my headers went on. just replace it and you should be fine.

Only reason I am asking is because there is a notice that comes in the box with the new MAF. It states that once the new MAF is in, the ecu must be updated.

I know what the instructions say, but I have installed new MAF's in two different 2000 Maximas without reprogamming the ECU. Supposedly the newer program is designed to operate with the new MAF.

They both ran great afterwards, despite not reprogramming the ECU.

Of course the real issue is money and time. The dealer is the only one that can do this, as it requires the Consult II and the appropriate download from the Nissan ASSIST.

I would be interested to know if this is at all detrimental to the new MAF. I can't see how it would be, but I don't pretend to understand everything I know about it.

Well, Nissan will reprogram it under the 8/80 Emissions warranty. I bought my MAF and they did it for free.

It covers the ECM and onboard diagnostic device, and the catalytic converter for 8 years, 80,000 miles. If you can find a good dealer they will also reprogram your ECU after MAF changes and after 02 Sensor changes for free during the 8/80

No one has still commented if they felt any difference with the way the car performs once they had the ecu reprogrammed.

If memory serves me right, this has been discussed many times, but no one has deliberately done this test; people have either got the update done or not. And remember there is also the placebo effect, you could be feeling a difference that isn't really there.

Why don't you do it and let us know how it feels before and after the reprogramming so that we'll have at least one answer from someone who consciously made the decision to find out?

Replaced my 2000 I30 MAF over a year ago and did not flash/reprogram the ECU. No problems.

Whoo hoo! Another MAF thread. Might as well jump on board.
I replaced my MAF a couple of months a go and did not get the ECU reprogrammed. I noticed a bit of a drop in fuel efficiency. I going to get the ECU reprogrammed after Christmas to see if it helps with the milage issue.

I replaced the MAF on my daughter's 2000 Maxima (108K) about 3 weeks ago. She said it ran fine after I did it. A week after the swap, I took it to the dealer to have the ECU reflashed, which they did for $47. She says she does not notice any difference. Before the MAF swap, she said she would occasionally hear a pop when cold starting. I heard this once or twice when I drove it. It sounded like it came from the filter box or throttle body, so I hoped the new MAF would cure the problem. It didn't, she still gets it, especially when cold, which it has been here in Chicago lately. The car runs OK for the miles, so I'm not going to get too excited about the noise.

Which Nissan did you get it reprogrammed? Will they reprogram my I30? I talked to Infiniti of Lisle and they said they would install my MAF and reprogram it for $325. Thats too much.

Im installing my own MAF which I bought from DaveB. I should have it buy Tuesday.

Im in Woodridge by the way.

Thanks,

- Omar

If your car is still under the federal emissions warranty, they have to reprogram it for free. Just ask a service advisor.

I had the ECU reflashed at Hawkinson Nissan in the Matteson auto mall. I bought the car there in late August. I know its a bit of a drive from Lisle, but I got a decent deal from them. They charged 1/2 hour labor.
