I've been searching through old threads to find out info on aftermarket differentials and have come up with very little info. I checked the stamp that is on the firewall to verify that my car is not equipped with a limited slip diff. I guess sliding around in the rain wasn't enough proof for me . Anyway I'm looking around for an aftermarket LSD for my 02 6 speed with little luck. I'm searched a few sites that are quaife dealers with no luck. I don't know a whole lot about the variations in LSD's but I know I want/need one. I'm sure the nissan HLSD is an option but likely a very pricey one, prob too expensive for me. Would I be able to use a junkyard HLSD if I were able to actually track it down? What is the difference between an aftermarket unit from quaife or phantom grip compared to the HLSD in the factory-equipped 6 speeds? Thanks

 

I don't think the HLSD diff. itself is that expensive but having it installed would be. My car came standard with it and you will still spin your wheels in the rain, HLSD just helps you get traction quicker.If you still have blowtenzas on your car then thats the problem.........

 

I do have the craptenza's still but have you ever driven a 6 speed without hlsd in the rain? It is much worse than a car with hlsd. I don't like the idea of putting around 250 lb-ft of torque to the ground on one wheel with rain and oil on the road. I have to be real careful with those tires in the rain just lightly feather the throttle in or i get torque steer out the a$$ and I hate it. I couldn't imagine doing that on an icey road. I plan on getting some 6th gen 18's soon and getting new tires with them.

well i would love to have lsd for my auto, wheel spin is ridiculous, but i dont think it will ever happen. Maybe just sell your 6 speed tranny and swap one in with hlsd. If you really want it that might be the best way.

I'm in need of one too but it will be a while. Search for a 2003 tranny with locking diff. I found several today when I was looking. I'm getting the 3rd gear crunch and am way out of warranty. I'll end up buying a used LSD unit and instaling it myself.

 

a aftermarket lsd unit can easily cost more than the factory HLSD option, so if you don't want to shell out money for a new OEM one, why bother with a aftermarket one?

There is no aftermarket lsd option for the 02-03 6spds. At least the OEM HLSD unit is a drop in affair.

 

Your only option is probably the OEM HLSD, if you can manage to find one.
The phantom grip is crap and will only cause problems, and the Quaife, while good, is not available for the 5.5 gens.

 

Ok, I just picked up my 5th gen last week. I have a 2000 SE that is a 5 Speed, how can I tell if it has LSD. What am I looking for on the wirewall?

 

It doesn't have LSD. For 2000's to 2001's, the only model that had the LSD was the 01 AE's.

 

THis is one thing that the auto guys may have over the manual guys. Because if I get my transmission built by NRH you get posi-traction, which I dont think is as good as a true LSD but I am sure its a ALOT better than what we are dealin with now.

Man, that seems crazy that they wouldn't put LSD in a 5th gen 5 speed SE. My 3rd gen auto had LSD.

if you put good tires on ur car you wont get much slip. i had goodyear eagle f1 gsd3's on my 2k 5speed best tire out there. on my 2k2 i have avon tech's and they were rated very high in wet and dry traction. of course if i gun it from a stop wheels spin but much much better traction than the craptenzas.

dude, don't waste money on it if you're only worried about rain. Just drive a little more careful. The only reason you would need an LSD is if you auto-xed.

It will help a little but it does not worth buying it for your purposes.

 

Has anyone put the HLSD on a non-equipped car (02-03 6 Speed). Also what do you mean by a drop in affair. Is this something that I can put in without removing the trans? Or would I have to by a 6 speed trans with HLSD equipped and sell my current trans? I would really like to know more about this.

 

Either way the trans will have to come out. It's really not that big of a deal to remove it.
To keep your trans it will have to be opened up and the LSD unit installed. I'm not sure how complicated the process is. I do know if it's not done right you will have a world of problems.
The most cost effective way would probobly be to buy a used 6 speed with LSD and swap it. You would also recoup some of the expence by selling yours.

Its a drop in affair as in the OEM HLSD unit replaces the open diff, whereas on the 5spds, the tranny case is different and will require a different driver side axle.
