front brake conversion

I have not been on here much lately but I remember reading that the 05 maxy front brakes would fit under stock 17s TE wheels on my 03. I wondered how many have tested this. I run 19s in the summer and most of the year but there are about 3 months i go back to the 17s because i really don't want to ruin wheels i can no longer replace. Please let me know any info. Or at least point me in the right direction.

yes a 6th gen setup is a direct bolt on to a 5.5 gen max.

I have the 6th gen calipers & rotors on mine, and they fit behind my factory wheels.

From my research, it seemed that the calipers and rotors would fit just fine behind 02-03 SE 17" wheels, but not behind 00-01 SE 17" wheels.

The TE wheels are just different colored SE wheels, right? If that's the case, the 6th gen calipers and rotors should fit just fine.

I got my 2k5 calipers from DAVEB for like $62/caliper new.

I just purchased all new rotors and 6th gen calipers. they will fit under the 5.5 gen SE wheels with no problems. I bought the calipers from the dealer, they give me dealer cost because I work for the BMW dealership across the street.

wounder y they dont fit on a 2k, wheels are same arent they? for 62 buls per caliper thats a sweet deal, but do u also have to get 2k5 rotors or can just swap the calipers?

Don't know why they won't fit, but I think it was irish who tried it with his 00-01 wheels and said they don't fit. (think the calipers hit the spokes)

But yeah, you also need 6th gen rotors. I got zinc plated, slotted 6th gen rotors from Auto_max95 in the GD forum for $138 shipped.

Another question to add to this topic....

If i get the 6gen calipers, do i need the 6 gen caliper mounting brakets as well or i can use the 6 gen calipers with the 5.5 gen brake caliper mounting braket???
It is easy to find 6th gen calipers, however, i am having hard time finding 6th gen brake caliper mounting brakets.


On a side note.... since i am still under bumper-to-bumper extended NISSAN warranty, would this upgrade really **** off my dealer and give him a good reason to refuse warranty service for my car?

the 5.5 gen does not need any brakets... it is a direct bolt on. all you need is the calipers, rotors and pads.

correct, they do NOT fit the 00-01 wheels, only the 02-03s. The curvature of the BACK of the spokes are different, even though the wheels look similar.

As for the warranty, I hardly believe anyone at the dealer will notice unless you point it out for them. Anyway, the only thing they could refuse to do would be work on the front brakes.

Wouldn't just putting larger rotors up front screw with the car's ABS and alter brake bias? I know I've read a lot of negatives on installing larger rotors just in the front. :\

Really the only negative that comes from the conversion is the fact that you are putting rotors that weigh significantly more than your OEMs on your car, so if you are in any way interested in performance, you will lose out there. Other than that, there aren't any that I've noticed with my Blehmco kit.

don't you mean "weigh"

but yes, i agree...all ABS does is pumps the brakes for you, so they don't lock up; installing larger rotors will not affect this....i don't really know how it would affect the braking balance though, but i would imagine the difference would be minimal....i think the 6th gen brake upgrade is simply for reliablity and cosmetic purposes...

I agree with the above two posts. The rotors are only about 1 inch larger, it increases braking torque. The piston surface area has increased, but not that much. I haven't noticed any adverse effects under braking (and I've had several instances since installation where I would have noticed a problem if there was one).

My main reasons for the upgrade were to A) hopefully help cure my warped rotors, and B) cosmetic.

And as posted above, the only negative is the added weight of the larger rotors. Though...if you're willing to spend the $, Matt93SE has 2-piece 6th gen rotors available now.

1.X inch bigger on 2k5 vs 5.5 gen. I THINK it is 11.1 to 12.2, but could be off a hair.

Arent there 2 piece 6th Gen rotors out there? Wasnt Matt Blehm developing something along these lines. I remember reading something about reduced weight rotors. The mass of the rotors was very similar if not lower than the 5th gen rotors, making the rotational mass lower.

yes, the 6th gen rotors/calipers are a direct bolt on to the 5.5....they DO clear the stock SE 17s and the upgrade is not much more than it would be to buy the 5.5 gen equipment new...there aren't many adverse effects from installing them (ie: you do not lose ABS capability; brake balance is not altered enough to notice, etc.) but these rotors will be more reliable in that they will warp less than the undersized stock rotors....the 5.5 gen calipers will NOT fit with the 6th gen rotors because obviously the rotors extend an extra 1/2" out from the center (radius)....the rotors are a definite cosmetic improvement in my book as well....their only fault is the weight which adds to the rotational mass, which could negetively affect performance...but as others have said, matt blehm has 2 piece 6th gen rotors available which are much lighter...

So thats the direction the slots are supposed to go? That has been my only big question. I see the slots and Cross-Drilled going either direction.... Or does it even matter?
