sooo expensive.

so i was thinking about getting some new shocks/struts installed and decided to get quoted on how much it would cost for labor. and lemme just say, GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY..... my local mechanic shop quoted $550 for labor. my question is. is this a fair price ? and Do you guys know any place that can install them cheaper ?. i just got some of my school money back from what i had'nt used, and its about $800....... so my budget is super tight. im in the chicago/skokie area. any nfo would be fantastic. btw... i think im going to go with the Illumina's. dont know what spirngs neither. any suggestions are accepted

lol no dude. he said labor only. i told him to quote me for labor. and thats the price i got. but since this site is so helpful. i forgot to ask another question. my headlight plastic cover seems to be scratched and looks like it accumulated some sort of fog or whatever on the inside. is there a way to get rid of that. i didnt want to start a new thread. i just recieved my angle eye headlights and i was wondering how i can clean up these plastic covers before i install them.

$550 is outrageous for labor. Dealership should only charge about $385 for labor if you take it there, cheaper at other shops, cheapest if you do it yourself.

It might not be the "fog" that you're thinking, it could just be that your plastic headlights need polishing. Try going to any automotive store and check to see if they sell any Meguiar's Plast-X. I had something similar to what you're describing, and I tried that, and now the headlights look like new.

Rent the spring compressor and an electric impact wrench and do the change yourself. Once done, make sure to get an alignment. Pretty easy thing to do and should only take an afternoon at most. Better to post in your local forum and ask for help from one of the guys in Chicago.

It should take a competent mechanic no more than 2 hours to do your entire suspension. At $550 dollars, that's almost $225/hour on just labor. I believe dealerships only charge around $80/hour.

Post in your regional forums to ask for help in exchange for pizzas and beer. You'll save a lot of money and make some friends in the process

Thanx for all of your posts/replies guys. as far as me doing it myself, i cant because i dont have a place to. i will definately post in the chicagomax forum and check out schamburg shop. thanx again for all the replies, excellent help this beast needs to get modded. i have 900 to play with right now, and i thought what better than to get me some new shocks/springs lower it. thinking of going with the angle eye look as well, but that headlight baking does not sound soo tastey... we'll see.

$550??? It should be no more then $200. I would do it myself, but if you don't have time then let the shop do it, not for $550 though!!! Mechanic diserves

I needed both shocks & struts just for the rear on my 95 and was quoted $300 by midas (parts & labor). I had my mechanic put them in for the part plus like $50 or $60. Thats my favorite thing to do, have midas diagnose the problem then have my guy fix it. ah hahahahahaha
