Help, I keep blowing Starters!

I have gone threw 3 in about a month.

Story:

Driving to work one day I smell somethign electrical. I was only 3 blocks away so I drove the rest of the way, when I was pulling into the parking lot the check engin light came on. I parked and turned the car off. The starter kept making a werring noise for a long time. I disconnected the battery. Came back in an hour and reconnected it and it kept doing the same nouse and the car would not start.

Had it towed to my mechanic and it was my starter. I had a second one so I had them replace it. But my check engin light stayed on. THey replaced some relay that also fried but the check engin light stayed on. THe error code that it displayes is my gas cap is not tight...which is not the case of course.

Less then 2 weeks later starter blows again, and I just replaced it my self.

Then yesterday I was moving my car in my drive way so I could get my SVX out when I turned it off, it kept werring....Again. It would start but who knows how long this will last.

This is driving me crazy!

Ideas? somewhere to look? Thank you napa for the life tiem starters.

Greg

Wiring comes to mind first. See that you don't have a short circuit anywhere.

Alot of rebuilt starters are "hit or miss" in some cases i have gone through 2-4 starters in some of my cars before getting one that sticks. Nothing was wrong with the car.

if i were you i would check wiring harness for obvious wear spots/rubbing/burnt areas etc...

it could also be the ign switch is bad or the signal lead to the starter is damaged/cut /pinched etc

that is the main places i would check first if you want to do it yourself

and don't just check wiring at "the starter" follow the wiring /loom/ remove some dash panels etc...

hope that helps!

also when you turn the car off and it is still making that "werring" noise take a test light down there and see if you get any juice to the signal wire cause there shouldn't be any until you turn the key to the start side!!

hope this helps too!!
