Slight "whistle" sound during acceleration

So I've noticed over the past few days that during moderate to heavy acceleration, the engine makes a slight whistle. My first thought was that the sound was being caused by air, but I'm not really sure. The whistle isn't very loud, and maybe this is common to these Maximas, but I have just begun to notice it so I am assuming it wasn't there when I got the car 2 months ago. I wish I could describe it better, but it almost sounds like someone snuck in a mini turbo kit when I wasn't looking.

It also seems like I am having to push the pedal further down to make the car downshift when passing. Feels like there might be a loss of horsepower or responsiveness.

Any ideas?

It is common. It's, evidently, the butterfly valve in the TB. Get an intake and it's even louder.

In regards to the other issue, is this a problem comparative to when you first bought the car?

Ok, as long as its normal I'm fine with it...I was afraid to say that I actually liked the sound lol.

As for the unresponsiveness, I am comparing it to when I first bought the car. A friend mentioned to me something about a computer chip learning the way I drive and adjusting the shifting accordingly...and that maybe I should reset it somehow???

I do majority of my driving on the highway at a constant speed of about 70mph, so not sure if that makes any difference at all for when I'm driving around town in the city.

you will get use to that. i was worried when i first noticed it on my maxima i'm sure mines is even louder than us because i have a cold air intake. i have everything checked out from exhaust manifold to catalyst converter but i couldnt find anything so i have just been dealing with it ever since.

Loss of power + whistling sound = vacuum leak. Been there, done that. Try resetting your ECU and see if you gain your power back. If so, you have a vacuum leak most likely.

So if I reset the ECU and gain my power back, it IS a vacuum leak?

Thats a normal sound. It even sounds better with an Intake. As for losing power or responsiveness here is a clue
Do a power injector flush. it costs about $60 but believe me its worth it. Its not like the regular injector cleaning that you pour the cleaner into your gas tank. This one is way better and you will feel the difference. Plus Lets hope you only put premium gas in your car.
Hope this helps

You could get this done anywhere oil change and transmission flush is done. It is done with a machine though. Most Mobil service centers do it.

could the whistle be coming from your speakers possibly? I get this every once in awhile with my aftermarket "stereo". Just throwing something out there.

Hey, were you able to get the problem fixed?? My situation is exactly identical to yours. Purchased an auto '00 a couple months ago. Didnt notice the sound or lack of acceleration, but lately I here the whistling sound, and my acceleration/gas mileage suck hugE!!!! I'm considering getting my MAF cleaned or replaced. What did you do to resolve this?? I would really like to know what you did to take care of this...

Thanks in advance.

is this really normal??

I have a 5MT AE with 83k, 100% stock. I had no whistle at all. the other day i took factory air box off and cleaned TB and changed the pcv valve while i was at it. put everything back together and now i have this constant HSSSSSSSSSSSSS sound and there is a clear whistle sound when i tap the throttle body.... its driving me crazy because it has caused this very noticeable vibration in the gas pedal too. its not a vacuum leak cuz i checked everything 20 times. everything is 100% plugged... could a dirty TB really mask this hssssss sound and whistle???

only thing i can think of is that the TB slipped out my hand two times and slammed shut, would it be bent or something?

My Maxima whistles too!! My sound comes from the little gray colored can that sits on top of the throttle boby. The throttle cable rests against it @ idle. I must admit it does sound good!

since its constant, probably a vacuum leak...did you reconnect everything properly?
