getting mudflaps off

Is there an easy way to get to the screw which is behind the wheel on a 5th gen mudflap? A screwdriver can easilly access the more outside one, but there is no way to get it behind the wheel to the other.. i didnt know if you had any tricks or anything.

get a ratchet and a small sized socket, 6 or 7 mm, put the socket on, and then use a small interchangeable screwdriver head in the socket, and basically remove the screw like its a bolt. thats how i did mine.

i used a very small socket and ratchet, but if that doesnt work, vice grips or pliers and the screwdriver piece...thats all i can think of.

ahh finally got them off, i was havig trouble with the rear. I think it looks better with them off, but as merovi said, there is some small rust around the screw holes (thats it on mine) but thats not metal so i figure its just from the screw itself and will wash off in time.

I was trying to take mine off on my 01 because they are black and the car is pearl white. Do most people think they look better with them off???? I can't get my two rears off because the center screw behind the wheel is worn from debris/pebbles hitting the screw. There is not much of the head left....Any suggestions.. I have two philips screwdrivers that I bought at home depot that are turned 90 degrees at the head that worked great for the front.....They fit fine without taking the wheels off but the heads are worn....

Ya i ended up doing that.. i had to put pressure on the bit with my fingers to get anough torque too. Kind of a PITA. As for yours paulpearl, the only way I know how to get stripped or worn screws out is by using a reverse bit or a cut-off wheel. I couldnt get the top screw off on one so I took the other two out, and kind of forcefully rotated the flap as i pulled away from the screw/car. This caused the hole for the screw on the mudflap to kind of enlarge and it eventually came off with some effort. The screw was then protruding about 1cm (with the absence of the flap), making it easy to turn with plyers.

JaKillz2 thanks for the info. I was thinking that also because two out of the three screws I can get to so taking those out probably will loosen the other screw for me to get with pliers. I am going to buy the painted ones to match my car... Do you know if the new ones come with the hardware (screws...) and also a good place to get them..My local stealership wants $94 for a new painted set...Thanks...

check the for sale maybe, otherwise i think you have to go to them. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I hear about people paying 100$ for them, so I'm guessing they too went to their dealer. I doubt it comes with hardware, but you should probably use better quality screws anyways, you saw what happened to the cheap OEM.
