2002 Maxima stalling problem

Hey Guys,

I recently purchased a 2002 Nissan Maxima SE Automatic, today when I went to start it, it stalled. It turned over fine revs went up to ~1500 then dropped down and stalled. Turned over fine when I started it again. The car other then that runs perfectly fine, it doesnt run rough or anything. I did notice when I smelt the exhaust it smelled a little rich. Ive read that o2 sensors and MAF's are common things to go, but I havent been able to find anyone with the same problem. Also the SES light is not on. Ive searched and checked the faq to no avail. Also I havent pulled the codes yet, but I am wondering if the 02 sensor throws a ghost code or if it triggors the SES light. It still has rougly a year left on the powertrain and around 4 years left on the emissions, and would anyone recommend gettting an extended warrenty on the car? (4year/80,000km)

2002 SE, 89,000km (55,315 miles).

Thanks
Phil

I have exactly the same problem. I've noticed that my car starts up fine when the engine is cold. If I shut off the engine and start it a few minutes later, it revs up and then shuts off. No codes or any symptoms of the car running bad besides the famous 1500-2000RPMs rattle once in awhile.

For sure the o2 sensor??, and specifically which one? I appreciate your quick response, thanks a bunch.
How do we go about testing them, with an ohmeter?

I have a 2001 AE SE, which is a different engine, but I recently had the same kind of problem. I would start it up normally, the rpms would go up then lower than where it would normally idle and stall. It would actually do an up, down, up, then stall. Once it is started and stays running, it seems ok.

I am guessing something with the MAF, O2 sensor?

MAF (mass air flow) sensor

If the car dies after you rev the car up, the car will throw a code for MAF malfunction and O2 bank 1 code. Replace the MAF sensor and it will run like new or >> http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=463385

The thing is that there are no codes. It starts up fine in a morning, it does it only after the engine is warm and the breaks between shut off and start up is not too long. Needle jumps up and then slowly goes down until it dies. If you rev it up a little, it stays on with no problem. From the second try it always starts up.

It's a sign that it's dying. If it's totally dead you'll get the codes ^__~

Hi... I have similar but not exact kind of problem.... car will stall at stop signs and when started, will have very low rpms and if held there for too long, it will also stall. However, code was thrown and was the IACV (intake air control valve). Car's been fixed since then... thanks ot DaveB.

damn..MAF are expensive for the 02-03, I wonder why they are so much cheaper for the 00-01. If i were to clean the MAF sensor with the MAF cleaner stuff would that fix the problem 100% or is it more or less a temporary thing?
