went to dealer to get my timing advanced

hey guys,
i just got back from Nissan Dealer, and i asked one of the guys that works there, if he could advance my timing from 15>17.....and he told me that he can change it on his Scanner thingy, but once he unplugs it from the car, it'll go right back to 15.....is he saying the truth, or is he just ****ing with me....?
he was pretty cool, he even looked on internet and crap....I told him that i'll bring him step by step instructions 2morrow and he can try it...."Which I'll get from here".....
one more quick question, will my gas mileage be any better when i advance my timing....?

Just incase he doesn't know what an A32 is, it's a 4th gen. (I think i'm correct).

It only resets itself back to normal on 4th gens. Our cars don't reset themselves. I've been running 17* for over a year now.

17* for several months here. Once you set it to 17, it will stay there until somebody with a Consult II changes it again.

The Nissan tech wasn't necessarily lying to you. He was just misinformed, because the older Maximas (4th gen) do reset themselves.

If he can prove it right in front of your face, then believe it. until then, tell him he's full of fecal matter.

What the technician was referring to is that the timing advance only affects the BASE timing (idle to ~2000rpm). The instant you press the throttle, the timing reverts to the pre-programmed maps from Nissan. The reason you feel it is that it physically takes less time to move from the base map to the pre programmed map (aka improved throttle response off idle). There has otherwise been no proof the consult II advance has made any real power gains.

and yes, on the A32 ECUs, it does revert back to 15 BTDC on base timing.
