HELP!!! Burning smell and tranny acting funny...

OK here's the situation:

2002 Maxima 6M w/ 88,000 miles. I noticed a burning smell over the weekend and today I go to my car and put it in 1st gear and the car barely starts to move. It feels as though the tranny is going out because it is doing this for every gear ( only went up to 3rd gear). The engine revs and the car feels as though the gear finally "catches" after a while, but the acceleration is HORRIBLE (as in NONE)!! What could this be??? What would cause the burning smell?? It kinda smells like a belt is burning...is that possible??? Any and all input is greatly appreciated.

Not that I doubt you guys regarding the clutch, but the gears seems to shift as easy as they ever have. Any suggestions on where to buy a new clutch ( e.g. group deals)??

OK, here's a few more questions for you guys:
1) If it is the clutch, what is a good brand to go with? Is the Spec deal in the Groupdeals a good brand?

2) Should I replace the flywheel at the same time?

3) Which is better for an aggressive driver, the stage 1 or 2??

4) Approx how much am I looking at for labor on doing a clutch replacement?? Ballpark figure is appreciated.

I have the same problem. I also have a 20002 with 80,000 miles on her. I have an automatic, but with the same problems. My acceleration is horrible, and I sometimes smell a burning smell if I keep trying to punch it. It just doesn't move. A car moved from in front of me this morning and my lane was wide open so I hit it, and the car went no where. It gradually climbed in RPMs but then did the same thing in the next gear. Whats up???

Not to sound redundant -- but I'd say it was the clutch as well. I'd check that out in your free time.

HEY fellas!!! Welcome to the wonderful world of Nissan Transmissions. Every Nissan has a tranny that will only last about 60-80K initially from the dealership. (MT or AT doesn't matter) the A33 Tranny was built with the idea in mind that the car would not be driven hard....My suggestion is I agree it could be a clutch, BUT there are two other parts that actually APPLY the gear in the car...the SERVO and the BAND inside the tranny. The band is a composit rubber that when you drive high RPMs alot BURNS OUT QUICKLY. I have an I35 AUTO TRANS and had mine rebuilt at 60K miles because I slap shift the car alot and enjoy the performance in 2nd gear. I burnt out the SERVO and the band on the car and they burnt out again when it was not fixed correctly. Transmission specialists are not specialists any more. I have NEVER had a good experience with repair shops in trannys. My suggestion is to ask if it is a possibility about the SERVO and BAND. Have you checked your AT fluid for Burning (clear or brownish) and you can also drop your Trans pan on the car to look for shavings. might give you a better Idea of what is truly going on internally.

OK, my other questions is this. If the clutch burned out, wouldn't that make it difficult to put the car into gear? I ask this becuase the clutch pedal moves the same as before (alobeit a little softer lately) and the gears shift into place the same as before. However, when I release the clutch, the car takes off slowly and finally accelerates after the RPMs have been @ 3-4k for a while. Should I be worried about anything with the tranny??? I have an extended warranty that covers the car up to 92k miles, so I have 4K miles left before the warranty expires. I know the clutch will probable need to be replaced soon (and do not doubt that it just may be a burned-out clutch), but I want to feel confident about this.

Someone had mentioned that I could do a visual check on the clutch. How would I go about doing this???
