Does changing the B-pipe dramatically change exhaust tone?

The other day I was installing my Progress sway bar, and noticed finally how big our B-pipe was. I made a thread before about changing it to a straight pipe and was told that the exhaust tone would get raspy. I found that Warpspeed makes a resonated version for the 5th gen for $170, but does anyone have experience with it? Will a different B-pipe change the exhaust sound that it is noticeable? My searches yielded nothing significant, thanks for the help.

yeah, depending on the size of the resonator, it will change the exhaust sound considerably. the sound will be amplified even more with an aftermarket muffler.

i have a straight through b-pipe and its not raspy. and yes, it does change the exhaust sound, but it sounds better, definetly not raspy on my car

i would consider future mods as well in your decision. after i had my cattman y pipe, i had a local exhaust shop fab up a 2.25" unresonated b pipe. it was slightly raspy but i dont think y pipe equipped 3.0s sound that good coming through a stock muffler anyways. when i went to headers, the raspiness was unbearable (extremely ricey) so i had them install a glasspack resonator.
this did decrease the noise but altered the tone to my dislike. my suggestion would be to have or buy a b pipe with a quality resonator (perforated instead of louvered) that is knonw to have a very minimal affect on exhaust flow but still sounds good.

I don't plan to install headers or a new muffler anytime soon. I just want a more pronounced growl from my exhaust.

i dont have a sound clip, nor will i get one because i dont have the means. the difference between a 3.5 and 3.0 when talking about raspiness is huge. most clips of 3.5's are much deeper and less raspy than most 3.0's. sorry i dont have a sound clip, try looking for a clip in the clips section.

Can you describe the sound of the straight through pipe then? Is it just louder? More growl?...etc?

3.5s do sound better in just about every case but i would stick with a quality resonator to cover yourself mainly if you plan to do any future exhaust work.

When I did it I put just a straight pipe there and it barely changed my sound. It made it sound a bit more aggressive but nothing that big.

One last question, is our B-pipe connected with flanges on both sides? Or does one side need to be cut?

Anyone? Does the factory B-pipe need to be cut off?

It bolts on at the Cat and the Muffler, nothing needs to be cut off.

if you only plan to replace the resonator section you have to cut/weld, but if you replace the entire b-pipe its bolt-on.

Ive had a few exhaust setups since back in the day and here is what ive come to find. Through trial & error.

Y-pipe, no resonator, OEM muffler= mostly quiet, until you get on it, then it sounds like absolute crap. Not exactly what id consider raspy, the exhaust note however has a horrible, very anoying metallic grinding noise to it. No the pipes were not hitting anything, it was 100% the exhaust note.

Y-pipe, no resonator, magnaflow muffer= hell no, enough said.

Y-pipe, cattman b, magnaflow muffer= very deep...too deep, got anoying.

Y-pipe, cattman b, OEM muffler=

So long as the OEM muffler stays, change whatever you want, so long as you leave a resonator of some sort on you'll be fine.

$30 later the result is more growl from 3,000rpm+ and a nice burble when starting the car. No noticeable sound increase with windows up, no rasp at all, and when in a parking garage you can hear the exhaust drone at 2,000rpm, but it is a simple "woooonnnn" sound.

n3985 - wait, you took your car to an exhaust shop...asked them to cut off the resonator and weld on a straight pipe?

btw, I have a fully cat-less 2.5 inch piping all the way to the stock axle back...sounds real nice but kind of raspy...i think thats from the test pipe....i'm sure it would sound alot nicer with the stock catalytic converter...oh well...

Yep, that's what I did, result is maybe 15-20% increase in exhaust sound. The guys were 3 complete rednecks as expected in Indiana, but they knew their stuff and was done in 10 minutes.
