Whine when accelerating - transmission?

I started getting this whining sound when I accelerate. Sounds like sound you get when your going in reverse, only this is while going forward. I think its only present while the car is cold. I found some posts where this is related to manual transmission bearnings on 4th gens. Could this be the same problem on mine auto?

Update: perhaps it's not transmission after all. I dont hear the whine when I stick my head under the hood and give it some gas. I do hear it at certain rpm when I give it some gas in neutral or park. The whine seems to go away after the car's been driving for a few mins. Any suggestions?

Have you tried listening to your alternator? Mine recently started whining, but does so at all RPM's. You could take a long screw driver and place it on the alt, which will transfer the noise to the handle and make it easy to hear.

My tranny is always loud in the morning before the fluid heats up. Also, my tranny gets gets louder through more usage as the redline oil wears down... things quiet down after I change the tranny fluid

Larrio Motors: I have an auto not a manual. Also, I changed my tranny fluid last year and I dont drive very often (about 4k a year).

SilverGLE: I think the sound does come from the speakers. I will try your screwdriver mehod.

Thanks
