Yeah, I can now smoke my tires in all 6 gears! And I only have an auto so the fuel filter must have added and extra gears too.

It's to soon to tell if it will make a difference in fuel economy. In regards to performance....read my post.

I had to re-host the pics. I was cleaning up my Cardomain page and forgot that I was hosting the pics for the maintenance here and deleted them. Oh well... here they are again.

 

Just finished replacing the fuel filter and the instructions were great. Took about 50mins. Once I filled up with gas the throttle response was better then before, like others have stated. I recommend doing this.

 

I thought nissan said do this at 100k?

Also 91 octane gasoline isn't necessarily cleaner than 87 octane gasoline so running a different octane wont affect your filter unless your station doesn't properly maintain their storage facilities for the lower octane fuel.

 

Umm no this isn't true...

 

Nissan says this is a lifetime item. It never has to be replaced but looking at the replaced filters it is definitely something worth doing for the dollars it takes. I recommend this change due to the minor "quircks" my change worked out as well as peice of mind.

It has been said over and over again about levels of Octane. You can run all the 87 you like but I won't. 91 regardless of the prices, I tried 87 once and my car let me know.

 

Nice write up.. Looks like nissan redesigned it to allow easier replacement. And also Only one fuel line not two? Either case a redesign. The 2000-2001 is pain, but done carefully, nothing will break. For the 01-02, it definitely looks simpler.

 

I run 91 as well but its not because the gasoline itself is "cleaner" it just burns cleaner. Higher octane fuel burns cleaner in the combustion chamber. I dont run 87 because these motors are big bore motors and they need and even burn to avoid knock. Running 87 vs 91 wont clog your filter any faster.

I do plan on changing mine probably around the 60k mark, so I agree with you there

 

Did mine yesterday.. filter looked filthy, but it didn't look like it was disintegrating or anything.. 2nd owner on the car, doubt the other owner ever had it changed. Am at 142,000km right now.

First impressions - really glad I did it! Car seems to start easier - rough idle on cold seems to have disappeared? and the car just seems a tad smoother in general.. maybe I'm making things up.

 

 

i just did this replacement today and it went fairly smooth, about half an hour to 45 minutes but there is one thing i will suggest. once you remove the fuel pump fuse, start the car till it dies. do it again and again and again until it wont start cause i got mad sprayage when i unclipped the fuel line cause there was a lot of pressure left in it. good thing i had a rag over the end when i took it off so it didnt get fuel everywhere. also, unscrew the gas cap before you attempt to take off the fuel line because there is also air pressure in your tank which will keep the fuel flowing even withouth the pump, to an extent. other than those things, it went well and deff worth replacing. at 58k the old filter was really dirty and i can feel the response is better and it seems like low end is a little better.

Just did my replacement today. Took about 45 mins start to finish.

Thanks "Orgullo", great write/photos. Tools needed list was perfect as well. Saved time having those ready.

I pulled the 15A Fuel Pump Fuse by the drivers knee area. Then I started the Maxima multiple times, I could not get it to run out of gas. I open the fuel cap to vent pressure. Even with all that there was a decent about of pressure/spray when I pulled the fuel line off the filter canister. I had paper towels around, but still had a spray, and had to swap out paper towels as they were full of fuel. Did not get much on the tank area, so it was an easy clean up. Overall a fairly easy job and I an not a mechanic type.

I had some dirt/dust around the filter ring, I would recommended vacuuming around there so no dirt falls in tank.

I was surprised how clean the inside of the fuel tank.

I had about half a tank (+) when I did the filter change.

My wife and I both agree the car hesitates a little less, and maybe a little more pep. (Not sure what is physiological though).

My filter looked just like the photos above.

Overall, I have piece of mind for doing this and feel it was worth it for that alone.

How difficult was removing the back seat? I'm at 145,000 miles so I might be due for this.

Just pull the small black "D" rings at the front/base and lift seat up and forward.
