Solid steering column bushing to tighten up steering?

thoughts.....pros are obvious, but can anyone think of any cons - particularly in terms of safety?

see thread..

i dont think its a safety issue. nissan probably just used the rubber for a softer feel...like the GLE springs

I dunno, josh...I am QUITE tempted to purchase one...but from an engineering perspective...rubber bushings are usually used in areas that require vibrational dampening, so I am not so certain that it'd behoove the column to have it slapping against another non-absorbent surface while driving...

That was my thoughts as well. Since he's local I might see if I can "try before I buy". It's definitely a good idea, and I doubt there's any safety issue - I'm just wondering how direct the feel is (i.e. "too" direct?)

The other alternative, as I mentioned in the other thread, would be to use a piece made of polyurethane, which would still absorb some vibration, but have a stiffer feel than rubber.

The steering rack has it's own bushings so I don't see this one adding anymore vibrations. But it won't hurt to try. I will let you know in a few weeks

I've made an inquiry with one of our polyurethane experts here, so we'll look into that route as well and then compare notes.

probably that it's not worth it, and that the AL ones will do the trick. But you know, always want to look at all the options, even if the original option (yours) may be the best one out there

sounds like a plan....

how long have you had yours on your car? How is the feel over bumpy roads and grooved pavement?

there are plenty of vibrations making their way up to the wheel through the shaft.. i doubt that bushing makes much of a difference unless it really twists when you turn the wheel.. i somehow doubt it since the linkage is metal. the bushing is more of a vertical damperner. i fail to see how it can "tighten" the steering.

josh its been almost a week but i havent driven my car alot due to my injury. i can say that i did feel a difference though.

the bushing does have play it in when you turn the wheel. i thought his was a good idea because some nissan cars have the rubber bushings and some nissan cars i seen didnt have a rubber bushing in there. all i am saying is this should provide a more direct feeling.

My UNeducated opinion/question: Won't this put alot more stress on the steering rack and cause it to wear out much quicker?
