Which Cat?

Thanks for the info! That is the one the Dealer specified. (they want $1,000 but my local shop will do it for $300)
That diagram is extremely helpfult but I find it a bit hard to read. Even when I blew it up it wasn't that easy to read. Do you have a larger version of that diagram around that you could send me?
Thanks again!

The only thing that bothers me is that PA won't pass my car through inspection w/ the light on. It is incredibly frustrating to me to have to spend money to fix a car that runs fine.

Also, my mechanic was confused about what I wanted him to replace. He now thinks the $1,000 quote from the dealer was a good price!!
I'm thinking of replacing the O2 sensors on each side of the pre cat to see if that gets rid of the code. It is a $200 gamble but it might be worth a shot and I'm also concerned that if I get the cat replaced, the light will come back on and the dealer will say "the o2 sensors were bad too".
I figure I have to fix it either way. Even if I wanted to get rid of it, I can't sell a car that won't pass inspection.
I'm actually kind of proud of the fact that the car is 7 yrs old (I bought in '99) and this is the first time I had to take it to the dealer (w/ a little help from the .org).

Anyways, help from the .org 7 years ago. Then your sort of an old school newbie.

If passing emissions is the problem, I would go buy a code reader for like 60 bucks (I think) that enables you to clear the light. Or go by autozone and have them clear it for free prior to driving to inspection.
I've had the code for years since I have headers - when I clear it, it sometimes stays off for weeks, sometimes for days. As long as you go to the inspection after the car has warmed up, you should pass. The pre-cats are only there to meet emissions from the time the car is started until the main cat gets warmed up.

My Max had 2 codes: P0420 and P0430. P0420 requires an ECU flash. P0430 is the expensive one.
In an attempt to save $ I replaced the O2 sensor after the bank 2 Cat last weekend. It usually takes my car about 320 miles to re-register a code after a reset. Today I got the SES light. But when I checked it I only had the P0420 code!!!
I know I can get a P0430 code anytime now but I think it is a good sign that it didn't show up right away. Maybe I can just get away w/ the O2 sensor.

I had a problem with the rear bank precat and the dealer replaced it along with the main cat and piping in between. The car has more power. My thinking is that the failing precat may have been causing a restriction of exhaust flow otherwise I have no idea why the car has more power.
