I could cut down the bulbs but you would still have to install them and trim off the 1/8th of the tab that's on the gauge itself. That I just used the cutter on a pair pliers. Unless you have another car and can send your whole cluster.

Since it's easy for me to do as long as you pay for the shipping back to you it would be all good. Plus then I can take more detailed pics for the write-up.

Very nice.

Is it an issue taking the needles off? Would it need to be recalibrated? I have a spare 2k2 cluster here but i could not figure out after tinkering with it if the needles had some type of notch to make sure it goes back where it should. (I never attached it to the car so i haven't gone that far with it).

You don't have to take the needles off. With unscrewing the four silver screws on the back the whole speedo and tach come out. You only have to take needles off if you want to strip the blue film off the gauges which I didn't do. If Dan5.5 sends me his cluster I will take more detailed pics of the process.

I should've mentioned earlier, i have a 5.5 gen. The cluster is built differently. Here are a couple of photos of the front and back. It's the most dissassembly i can do without touching the needles.

Here's how it looks behind the face (and needles taken out)

lol, good luck with the needle recalibration, i did that with my civic back then, and it was a ***** to recalibrate it. so i just sucked it up and the speedo was 3-4 miles off.

Wow that's way different from mine. I really don't think this would work for 02-03 owners.

How much room is behind the gauge face and the white part. Maybe you could fit a cold cathode ring behind it. But that would require the calibration of the needles.

They don't look much different from the original color. The white ones are much better.

Not a lot since that space is occupied by clear plastic with variable fine notches which i figure is there to help distribute the light evenly (together with the variable opaqueness of the face itself).

I did try a flex LED wire but the one i got was too small--so back to the drawing board on that one. A CCFL ring might actually work better now that you mention it.

The other option i'm looking into are EL sheets that you can cut yourself, the only problem there is although the light emitted will be uniform, the pattern on the face will block certain areas more than others, effectively making the output uneven once installed.
