Remote Start

I'd like to install a remote start kit into my 01 Max. I don't know anything about these kits, but there's some really ($20) cheap kits on Ebay. I've got a few questions.

1) The only feature i'm looking for is to be able to hit a button and start my car from about 40 yards away, any suggestions for brand/model?

2) How complicated is this thing going to be to install?

3) Any con's of installing a remote start kit?

Stay away from the eBay ones. Go to a reputable shop and get it installed. If you don't know what you're doing, yes it's complicated.

I can't testify as to the quality of remote starters. But The saying applies "You get what you pay for.." And one thing that varies more than anything would be range.. as i'm sure most companies sell a working product.

As far as installation goes, If ya don't know how to 'hot wire' a car with a 'micro-chip', and have never hard wired a head unit (soldered in the comfort of a drivers seat or worse) then this will be a great undertaking. It's not as simple as interrupting one wire and inserting the unit. It get's complicated.

To put it simply, "like if ya have to ask, uh huh huh huh, then you don't know"

u will also need to sacrifice one of your keys. a key will need to be cut so that the chip within the key can be used for the remote start to work

Yup, along with the remote starter, you'll need to get a module to put the key with a chip inside it to get the remote starter to work. Module = $40 - $50, sacrificed key or make a new one = more money. Or you can do what I did, get a data transponder. Technically it's a module. Once it's installed, you 'program' it once by using your original key to start up the car and it's done with programming. It reads the chip's data and transfer it into the module so you won't need an extra key. It's called a pkn2 or on some ebay pages, ibn2 and ib-n2. It's like $40 - $60. I got an ibn2 off ebay (i'm guessing a renamed model of the pkn2) and it's been working for a month so far. Also worked on my gf's Altima.

I have a Hornet 554t remote start. The range is pretty damn good...I can start my car from my bed which is about 500 feet away through some walls and a bunch of dirt (live on a hill). But this remote start is about 3 years old...damn almost 4 now.

Contact Pearl96Max...he knows his stuff. He can give you some guidance.

I have a Viper 791XV alarm with remote starter installed. Mine required the bypass module that needs a spare chipped key. The bypass module cost me extra but whoever you get to install it should have them.
