Any difference in 5 and 5.5 gen mufflers?

Just like it says, is there any difference other than the shroud around the two pipes?

I was able to pick up a 2k2 rear when my stock one had broken a flange. I couldn't tell the difference in performance/sound, that being said there shouldn't be any differences that make any gains/loss/etc. Unless we cut it out, I can't imagine it being ANY different. Hope that helps.

Besides the tipes, they're the exact same thing.

the 5.5 is a variable muffler direct imported from the GTR. AT a certain backpressure a flap is supposed to open and let more air out without actually quieting it. That's supposed to be free flowing and thus more power.

How much are we talking here? This is my story: Had stock >> put on magnaflow (sounded great) >> got headers. Still sounds good untill I get on the interstate at 70-80mph and has a loud drone. I thought I could get used to it but now its driving me nuts. I found a guy on here that will trade me his stock 00' muffler, but want to know will there be that big of a difference.

Probably if you'll switch back to your OEM muffler and keep the headers, your drone would be not as loud as it's right now...

Are you talking about the shroud that goes over the two pipes to make it look like one pipe?

It's only a shroud over the tips, not a single tip.

The Iconel flap was on all 5th gen mufflers so the 5 and 5.5 should be the same.

There isn't anything different between GXE, SE and GLE on the 2k models other than the shroud over the tips... i bought a new GXE muffler from daveB and it fit perfect on the GLE except, there wasn't a place to tighten the shroud to.

OK, they have it, but what the hell means this:

"For 2001, engine horsepower of the 3.0-liter V6 in the SE 20th Anniversary Edition model has been increased by five, for a total of 227. This was achieved through a new exhaust system featuring a new muffler with downward facing pipes."

BTW, the muffler's part number for Maxima GLE 2000 is 20100-3Y370
and for the Maxima SE AE 2001 is 20100-3Y380

Given Nissan's track record regarding power ratings (255 HP anyone?), I wouldn't put much stock and that marketing bit. Any self respecting Nissan marketer can add 5 HP worth of power at the stroke of a pen, 10 if the engineers had not added those ghey "downward facing pipes" to the AE...

There's no difference between 5 and 5.5 gen mufflers, regardless of trim level.

I never thought a muffler would/could make that big of a difference other than sound. I just wanted to know about the flap thing, and if there really is a difference in them.
