noise on startup,....cant be good

on start up,..(temp doesnt matter time of day doesnt matter) after i start the car, and let go of the key,..at the same time it revs up to maybe 2000-2500ish and makes the worst "ERRR" grinding noise,.. its almost like its reving higher then it should and something is retarding it back

and can clearly be heard inside and outside of the car..so my biggest fear is the timing chain or something to do with it,.. and the reason i say that is cuz every once in a long while it wont do it,...

,...i tried searching and alot of things i found said alternator/starter ,...but i cant see either of them causing it cuz the thing starts like a champ and holds power the same,.. but what do i know.. any suggestions would be appreciated,..thanks in advance

I had a screeching noise similar to what you describe at around 75K miles and it was the starter. My cousin had a similar noise and it was a worn-out belt. So, I would check belts first and then take it to a shop, which rebuilds starters and alternators and let them listen to it. If it's the starter then I got mine changed at a place like this for $150 with 18 month warranty. Rpms revving up to 2000 is normal at startup as long as they come down right away to 1300 or so when cold or 700 or so when engine is already warm.

actually, if the noise just last for a second or less, it's probably the starter not disengaging. You need to either disassemble and relube the starter engagement gear, or get a new one. Both options are pretty cheap and easy.

Do the 00-01's have the VTC grinding issue??

NOt sure....but if they do, it could possibly be that - but it doesn't sound like it from what you described.

You can either get used to it or change the starter. I got used to mine. bindex part not disengaging, blah blah. No one really cares...tell them it's the supercharger motor
