6 speed upgrade on 2000 max

The tranny was going on my 5 speed so I talked with guy at my local shop about doing a 6 speed. The job turned out great was expensive, being that the car is paid for and the other upgrades to the car I feel happy with choice.

DAMN, wouldn't it have been better to just sell you're car and buy an actual 5.5 gen?

how does the car drive compared to the 5 speed? Any worthy differences in acceleration or overall everyday driving? I've been looking into this for a long time but never actually found someone who has done it.

Take everything you like about car now and add shorter throw from gear to gear
better gas mileage smoother take off and higher speed at lower rpm.

Which speed sensor did you use and how far off are the MPH? I've read that 5th gens use the ABS sensors to determine speed though so maybe you didn't have to use one...? TIA.

I didn't see the link. If he had posted up the pics onto the thread then it would have been a different thing. So you don't have to be a d!ck about it since I already retracted my comment.

thats sweet, so how does the 3.0 run with the 6 speed and its ratios? Ive read on here somewhere that the sixxer is actually more inefficient than the 5.5 gen automatic, does it feel faster or just smoother/better throw?

Next possibly dumb question: What would be the best of the three ifyour gonna spend as much money as he did, swapping the six speed in for the 5, swapping the 3.5 in for the 3.0(same 5 speed trans) or doing a major power adder to the 3.0 like FI or internal cam/valvetrain work??

Well for me it was worth the investment it may not for others the tranny came from a 2002 with 14000 miles so far it's real smooth. The 3.0 has no problems with the tranny power and acceleration is better than the 5 speed the clutch only needs a tap to go from gear to gear and the extra is nice. The technical side I only have the basic information my mechanic really knows every detail the way he does the job you don't have to change the computer or the harness.

Well the reason I posted this is some guys have done internal cam/valve train work with all kinds of other upgrades all that work is lost when you trade the car in just to get a 6 speed .You will be hard pressed to get a 3.5 into 00-01 the subframe is different I was told.

I prolly spent about about a grand on my 00. I got most of the stuff on the cheap, slightly used stuff, good deals and did all the work myself.

could you PM me the info on the shop that did your work?
I'm getting ready to do this in the next month or two.
input shaft bearing is wasted in my 198K mile 5spd.
still drives though... knock on wood.....
Thanks, Brent

Well as far i know the speed sensor is in the abs so there should be no change in the mph reading. From what I can tell everything stayed the same, rpm are lower in 5th than on the 5 speed gearbox with the car running same speed and I only turn 2200 at 80mph in 6th.

this is great. a 5th gen 6 spd swap is done, and i just heard word that my 5.5gen 6spd swap is running and will be done soon. two new trans swaps on the table for max owners, although i wouldnt really suggest a 5.5 6spd swap, its about the same or cheaper than his 5th gen 6spd.

Great job. I see your positive battery terminal cover is broken just like mine. I used epoxy to fix mine.

I beg to differ...I made a thread regarding this problem on 5.5 gens and its a pretty new thread. Most 6 speed 5.5 gen owners have NOT had any 3rd gear problems..not "all" 5.5 gens
