Used 2k2 SE - What to look for
Hey everybody I recently had a 2k SE 5 speed that I gave up because I moved to NYC and i couldn't stand it getting dinged up while street parked so I opted for mass transportation. Anyway I miss having a car so i'm looking into buying a 2k2 SE 6 speed now and would like to know if any owners could share some insight on common problems or ares to look out for. I know there was a TSB for the headlight brackets. Do the 2k2s and 2k3s still have the O2 sensor SES light that plagued the 2k and 2k1s? Anything I should look out for with the 3.5VQ? From my understanding the 2k2 maxima was the first nissan to get this version of the VQ and although it has proven itself in so many vehicles I just wanted to know if any of you experienced any first year bugs. Any shared experiences with your cars would be appreciated. Thanks!

Take it to a local nissan dealer and ask for a 100 point inspection. Look for accident scars (overspray near seals, inside trunk walls, under hood)... maybe there's more... but my input 4 u... GL

I am lucky enough to have had no problems with my 02 6spd. I would call a local nissan dealer and ask for them to run the VIN and of course run a carfax. Common problems: Blown Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, warped brake rotors (vibration in the steering wheel under braking), worn-out wheel bearings, bose problems, chipped paint. Certainly look at the condition of the fluids to see if they have been properly maintained. If you are getting a 6spd try to shop for one that has the HLSD option it's worth it, I wish my max had it. Good luck

I wasn't aware that the 02 had the HLSD as an option. I always thought they started putting them on the 03's. Besides dumping the clutch or flooring it in 1st through 2nd how can I tell if the car is equipped with the HLSD? I don't want to abuse the car when the owner lets me test drive it and i'm afraid he might not even know if he has the HLSD. Thanks

The pedals can be easily added to a non-hlsd car (I did this myself). On the firewall under the hood to the left of the brake master cylinder there is a stamp that has the trans. code on it, if it ends in an H it has hlsd, if it ends in an A it's an open diff.

i got a great deal on an 02 se 6speed, with only 33,000 miles on it!
fantastic condition... i haven't had any problems, and don't have a problem with any kind of grind or difficulty going into 3rd as some have claimed.
only problem i have is that this car was involved in a vehicle prowl, and the oem nav and bose head unit were stolen. unfortunately, the touch screen nav unit is intergral with the hvac climate control... so i'm looking for a unit, complete with funtion buttons and harness pigtail (the idiot cut the wires instead of unplugging...) no worried about the head unit.
can anybody help me find an oem nav unit?

As for the original thread starter, I Would drive the car hard through the gears and have a friend follow you and look for any blow by smoke through the gears. Ask for records on oil changes and look at the oil level your self...not too sure how else to see if the car is burning oil. I am very tempted to buy a 2002-2003 SE 6 speed right now because they offer so much for so little $$, however the oil burning engine issue is keeping me away.
