Phenolic Spacer Development for VQ35s
#643
It might be a couple weeks before I start on this. I'm actually not even used to the car yet. I havent driven it in almost a week because it's been snowing here and I am only driving my old 4th gen in the salt and snow. The 03 ain't touchin that nasty stuff...Also I've had the clutch replaced upon buying the 03(Oct) and after about 700 miles I am just starting to get on it a little.

Sorry if I haven't read all the pages and its been asked..but. How has everyones experience been with installing these things? Do shops know how to install these properly? How much are they typically charging to do it.
#647
Call around to see what a spark plug change runs (since you have 5.5 gen that requires intake manifold removal to change the rear plugs) and you can probably get a shop to install the spacers for a bit more. Try to find a shop that specializes in performance, they should be familiar already with phenolic spacers.

The Intake Spacers come with full detailed instructions with pictures. Tell them to read over it.
The most common price I hear for a shop to install these spacers is around $150 labor.

Should actually improve somewhat, at least in theory to the slightly lengthening of the intake runners (due to spacer thickness) increasing air velocity. Probably why the dyno curve shows a nice midrange torque bump. More torque in the midrange means less throttle to maintain the same speed.
#651
Gas mileage is something we have not tested. In theory, it definitely helps gas mileage as Scott mentioned. But since this has not been tested, I can't say what kind of gas mileage gain you will see.
That nice bump you see in the midrange is the VIAS release point. The gain in power when the variable intake releases is very noticeable.

I'm about to do this, but I was checking out the dyno sheet and noticed a big increase in power also at 2400/2500 RPMs, am I seeing that correctly?

the increase is in the perfect place in the power band.

there is an increase down low but you wont really feel it there since even with the increase, its low HP (~100). you feel it from 4,000 - 5,000 when the IM valve opens.

I will be getting a set asap! Many people on here have purchased these and I have yet to here a bad review on them.

i never said the video "showed the improvement that the spacers give".
does the video totally discount everything else i said based on being the first person to have these
please find someone else to try and argue with.
thanks
and nice sig...use someone else's pathetic quote cause you arent smart enough to think up something yourself

Read post 656 before you say I'm arguing with anything. I know these are good but I don't understand what that video was about? Was it a comparison with something? All I can see from the video was a max flooring it at 4k rpm that sounded like it had a intake. I wasn't impressed! With a camera I can post the same vid if I wanted and I don't have the spacers.
And, Deal with my sig! I may of not made the quote but I do know when to recognize a good quote...

Not much of an argument. I was just wondering what the video ment?

i can also recognize a good smart quote....that quote isnt even clever or funny.

Yes, the 'non' ricer, I like the direction you're headed, Puppet can aid in this 'direction'.

But just like soonerfan said, the biggest gain is right when the VIAS opens!

Done!
Finished it up and did the throttle/accel relearn and it drove fine. I didn't do the idle relearn yet...It seems a bit low but that's where it was before. I'll do this later. I can feel the nice little boost at 4K. I could only do this in 3rd gear...2nd would loose traction right there(cold roads), it's 5 degrees here.
I drove around town and racked up 30 miles, 75% hwy. I probobly floored it close to 10 times getting on different on-ramps. When I returned my mileage was reading 26.5 on the computer, so....it's probobly 23 give or take. Happy about that considering the extreme cold temps and wind.
Will it run even better after the computer adjusts to all the new stuff...sparks,air filter, spacers, battery being unpluged for 48 hours?

The computer should adjust pretty fast. But I have heard stories about it taking 50 miles or so for it to fully adjust. But in my experience, the ECU learns rather quickly (just a few miles).

If you had a before clip to compare that would be great!
I can't wait until it warms up and I can feel the boost in 2nd gear without loss of traction...Kind of reminds me of the 3rd gen I had long ago. I would feel a boost around 5K I think....
I kind of freaked out at the end when I still had 3 important looking bolts still laying on the fender....My pulse started beating a little harder and then I realized those were replaced with yours!
That's great! I'm glad you are happy! You'll absolutely LOVE these spacers when the weather warms up! No more sluggish car when racing in extreme temps!

Not too bad...I was really slow at it..It took me about 6 hours I think over three days. I was little worried about getting at the coolant hoses for the tb down there, but once I got them off it was easier than I thought to put them on the bypass you provided, however I wasn't too impressed with the clamping force of the stock hose clamps, I hope they don't end up leaking. I did end up waiting till I got everything apart before fully removing the support bracket near the firewall.

If you find that the stock hose clamps aren't strong enough, it shouldn't be too hard to replace the clamps afterwards now that the coolant is bypassed. But I decided to use barb fittings with 4 barbs per end in order to overengineering things a bit. The stock fitting only has one barb.
