weird problem, i think its my tranny

So lately I've been having a problem, almost feels like a power loss, kinda like MAF, but not quite. Both me and my friend agree it feels like the engine IS making the power, and there is a problem transferring it to the wheels. This problem is periodic, and there is no way for me to make it happen, just come and goes, but wont go away until the car has been shut off. I had a no charge estimate from a tranny shop tell me that its fine, he drove it(thats all he did) and its fine. But now i'm getting a smell that is strongest right ebove my transmission. It is not as strong anywhere else but there. He is also telling me its a problem with my o2 sensor because i have a P0430 code and a heater o2 code. Is this BS? could it really my O2 related? does it sound like a clutch burning problem? The odor is almost like a burning rubber, maybe burning brake smell. (its not my brakes burning or my tires, just thats kinda of odor)

2k 5spd 158,xxx miles. Please help.

Hmmmm.. What gears and/or RPM range does this happen in? I'm going to assume you've got a 5-speed... I'm not sure what your problem could be, but that info should help someone figure it out...

A "burning brake" smell is almost exactly the same smell as a slipping clutch. So it sounds to me like your clutch is on its way out.

Couple of tests.

In 5th gear at about 35 - 40mph, stand on it. If the clutch is slipping, the revs will climb with no apparent increase in road speed.

At rest with the hand brake on, put the car into 3rd gear and slowly release the clutch. If it stalls its gripping, if it doesnt your, clutch is ready for replacement.

Is it going into gear as smoothly as it always did or are you finding that sometimes you have to have another go at getting it into (any) gear?

I'll give those tests a shot on my way to the girlfriends, but this doesn't happen at a certain RPM range, its constant throughout the powerband, in any gear. The only thing is, sometimes its acting funny, sometimes its fine, the only thing i've noticed is that when it is acting funny, it doesn't stop until the car is off and restarted, next time it acts up i'll try restarting it at a light, and see if its just a restart, or it needs to sit for a few. The problem with going into gear, is it just wont do it. It feels like theres something that is preventing me from moving the shifter into that gear, and sometimes i can engage it, and even then it doesn't feel like its in all the way and i'm waiting for it to just pop out, but so far that hasn't happened. This problem is also there sometimes, and then just dissapears, irrelevent to the car being restarted.

another note i remember is that my slave cylinder is leaking somewhere, VERY small leak, top it off maybe every 2 weeks or so, and its never below half way when i top it off. Both this leaking slave and the O2 sensor codes have been with the car for many months now, this problem just starting happening after being stuck in the snow(which prolly has alot to do with it)

have a friend of the family calling a few places(hes a mechanic aswell) getting some more opions and hopefully some no charge estimates

Well both tests failed. Put the car in 3rd, pulled the e-brake and it died. Was doing about 38ish, put it into 5th and went WOT, the car just accelerated, slowly, but it didn't jump or skip at all. I'm going to wait until the symptoms start happening again and give these tests another shot

replace your MAF, your motor might be running with a weird AFR causing a bad smell.
