VQ30DEK: engine talk

I searched on forums, but didn't find anything. So I'm searching about our engines and find: http://www.answers.com/topic/nissan-vq-engine

1. What does DE and K stand for? dual exhaust with kick?

Also, proud to note that our engines have been voted top 10 engine since ward's list came out:
http://www.answers.com/topic/ward-s-10-best-engines

http://www.350z-tech.com/zwiki/VQ35HR seems to be the next big thing, and perhaps the vq37dett??

any ideas?

The K is named after Kaizen, the Japanese idea of peak performance and the spirit of continuous improvement adopted by the Japanese car industry in the 80s.

since we are talking about basic Nissan stuff -

Nissan used to be called Datsun...but just in the US market. When Nissan launched their line for the US market, they were afraid that they wouldn't be able to compete with US car companies. They launched as Datsun so that if it failed, it wouldn't ruin the Nissan name that was established, successful, and respected in Japan.

I don't think this is correct...I lived in Australia for a year when I was a kid (1986-1987) and we owned a Datsun, not a Nissan....

i didnt finish the story
the US was the 1st market to get the nissan (datsun) besides japan. it was a success so they started selling datsuns in other countries. it wasnt until later that they all became nissans again when the export was a success

Makes sense. I always wondered why they started out as Datsun and then switched.

This thread is just filled with information... Who would have thunk it...
My father owned a Datsun 240., best car he ever owned...(his words not mine)... Personally my first Nissan experience was a bad one... My first car was a Nissan Stanza... (HUGE PIECE OF JUNK)...

Why is this thread still even going on...

It was not a change... They were pushing into new markets and wanted the protection that if they failed, the Nissan name did not get dragged in the mud... When Datsun became a hit, the badge was changed. Clear, simple and to the point.

And before Datsun it was Branded as DAT with its first vehicle in 1911 created by a Japanese yet trained as an engineer in the US

Datsun 810 was also the First Generation Maxima 1977-1980 with 125hp and base price of $5,099. We recognize the 81-84 as the first gen but that is only because it was rebadged Maxima but was still recognized as the 810 in Japan.

Don't forget the original poor man's BMW, the Datsun 510. 96hp FTW!

I'm glad you have a place to feel like this. . I for one, don't think this is a worthless thread, as I think this board is the best place to ask n00b questions like this, and definitely NOT the dealership (where you'd think that salesmen know their **** about cars but actually don't care as long as they get their cut---I actually had a salesman tell me that there was a VQ33* in the 5th gen and I was blown away). . .

Remember that we come from all walks of life here and aren't all nissan mechanics. I did btw google search this thread for a while to find what I was looking for. Now I know. 聞くは一時の恥、聞かぬは一生の恥 ...
