........... MAF, O2, Coil ... The $$ is alreay sucking away....

that big sucking sound, of a few hundred to the Stealership.

Until last September, my 2000 SE had great pep and acceleration. If on highway, and going 50mph, slam on gas and the car would literally 'punch' through. You could feel the G force in under a second as the car jumped exponentially in speed in 2 or 3 seconds. Awesome!!

Now, I don't know whats going on. While driving below 30mph I can hear a hum, and this is felt in the cabin. Sort of like a soft sounding moped sound. And a slight vibration; usually when coming out of a red light and sinitial, slight acceleration. Ocassionaly, if I try to 'punch it' it might punch it 1 out of 10 times, and no way near the instant accelleration before all of this. A 'soft accleration.'

The dealership at first said this has the classic signs of a failed Mass Airflow Sensor. I have new platinum plugs. Called said dealership and one of the guys suggested it could be a bad O2 sensor, or coil. I'm still going with my gut, the MAF.

Anyone heard, or have an idea of what is causing the SE to now 'rattle' a bit and make this moped like sound when driving moderately?

I know this is gonna run me a few hundred to get fixed.......Arrrrrgh!!

any power loss at distinct RPM'?S or rather.. can u feel the power almost cut out at a certain RPM?,.. no CEL? ,.. i would say MAF . . and FYI ,.. it will cost you about 77-95 bucks for a new MAF which 'if you can change your own oil you can change your MAF',.. trust me,.. theres def a write up someone made for it too ,.. look for some kind of intake install write up.. same idea..its literally a 15-20 min job

^ Exactly. My MAF died and I lost acceleration above 3.5k. Actually a lot of stuff failed whenever I disconnected the negative terminal from my battery (MAF, all 6 coils, AT VB).

Its a bit odd. It doesn't necessarily drop out a certain RPM. The RPM will climb (today I had it in the 7k range for a few seconds). But when I hit the gas the RPM slowly climbs, and the speed increase is incremental, not a burst.

BTW, I think I could replace my own MAF (if thats the problem), but the computer codes would need to be cleared/reset for the updated MAF. Not sure how I can do this without going to a dealer.

But, anyone think it might not be a MAF issue?

im still thinking MAF,.. what computer codes would need to be reset? ,.. you mean the ECU updates?,.. bs on that,.. not needed IMO,.. ive replaced an MAF on my car before with no reset along with a few others on here and no problems,..i think MAF is your cheapest route to fixing,.. the dealer diag is gunna be close to the price of a new maf anyways,...

also like sloppymax said.. your "new plugs" what kind are they?

maf is easy to replace so are coils and o2's. what's the current mileage on your car if its over 100k then yes you will need a new maf perhapes coils too but usually when o2 sensor or the coil goes bad you will get SES light but if theres no light what you can do is go to autozone and use thier OBD code reader to see if theres any hidden code is present. as for the MAF its easy to replace and it cost around $100 at www.autopartswarehouse.com you will need to have your ECM reprogrammed by dealer which is another $80 the ECM reprogramming is recommended by manufacturer but is realy not necessary. by having this procedure done you might notice a little gain in MPG and some other minor improvements. when i changed my maf i did have the ECM reprogrammed.

I'm up to 87,600 miles. BTW, I am NOT getting any rough idle. Perfect at idle or at stops. All around MPG is bad. About 12mpg City. I use Premium fuel. Not sure what it means by driving it rough, but its lots of stop and go on the way home.

I got some NKG (or NGK?) platinum plugs last June. I need to have some 'minor' suff checked out in the car as well, and thinking of doing all of this at the dealership.

-driver side seat back recline switch does not work. Motor confirmed to still be ok. (think thats $90?)
-Possible new steering boot
-Bose system. Amp isn't sending signal to bose subs properly. I love the speakers, but the subs might need replacement. (prob do this locally, at a car auto shop)
- 'B' level service w/o the oil change.
-install MAF and reset ECU.

Other than the above, I think I'll take a chance and order a new MAF online and have them put it in. Anyone know the part number? I know the MAF for the 2000 SE was updated.

Would a dying/dead MAF cause the issue I've had for a few months now of the new hum, sort of a very soft moped like sound, with slight chassis/cabin vibration? Thoughts....
