ABS issues on an '02 SE

I have an '02 Maxima SE and I am experiencing some ABS issues.

First Issue:
-If you apply the brakes firmly the ABS light pops on.

Second Issue:
-The ABS system activates in normal driving. In fact, my wife came to a stop sign the other day and ended up running the stop sign because the ABS system engaged.

Any thoughts? Are these two items related?

wait..im confused...she ran the stop sign because the abs engaged? meaning they were only pulsating and the car wouldnt come to a complete stop?,..and if the brake light is on and the car is stopping funny then i would say yes the two are related. . .

there could be 3 main culprits, really:

1. the abs computer is shot
2. the abs sensor in one or more of the wheels is no good
3. the abs sensor "sprocket" on the hub itself is worn/bad

have you done any other brake work recently? Have you inspected the abs lines to make sure one isn't cut?

How hard is it to replace a wheel speed sensor?

I took the car to a local mechanic and his Scan Tool wouldn't let him talk with the ABS.... so he said take it to the Nissan Dealer.

Nissan said it was a bad wheel speed sensor and a bad control module.............$2150 to get it fixed!!!!!

Does this sound right? Is it normal for two pieces to fail at the sametime?

I am trying to evaluate other options.
