Low idle

Can someone help me figure out why my idle is so low. When i first start the car it idles around 1,000 then it drops down to approx 475. At 475 rmps you can hear a tink noise. This cant be the stock set idle. What are these cars suppose to idle at. Can someone tell me how to increase the idle.

Yup, MIL = Malfunction indicator lamp/light. It could be an air leak maybe...

on a 3.0, you can control the idle by adjusting the throttle cable.

on the 3.5, thats all controlled electronically since its "drive by wire".
problem with the throttle position sensor?

There are 4 sensors, and a deviation in any of the outputs would result in an MIL.

Check your oil cap. I left mine off because stupid me forgot to put it back on after I changed the oil. I noticed coming to a stop the engine would drop down pretty low to almost stalling. Stupid me, again, did the same thing on my wife's mustang too a month later! Same issue there.

Clean your throttle body. I've had a low idle for the past 6 months or so and I just cleaned my TB. Back up to 650 now. (was at 450)

Those were the only 2 times I did that. Never and havn't forgotten since. I just noticed the idle speed dropped and weird drivability issues. All went away after putting the cap back on.

Oh yea, throttle body cleaning, forgot about that one.

off topic
Oh, and Sooner... I was reading your oil consumption thread, good luck on your next steps and I saw your previous Maxima at Brown Nissan last year when I got my coils replaced under warrenty.

actually several months ago i had a ses light that came on and took it to the dealer. They said i needed a NEW tps which was going to be 800 dollars installed. So i told them to screw themselves. Is this anything i should worry about. like engine failure or something that will cause alot of damage if i dont fix.

Not severe engine damage. Might risk going into limp mode which blows booty.

Sensor is integrated into the TB. It's part of the servo motor.

what method did you use to clean it? Did you move the butterfly plate? If so,

Did you do the ECU reset/ IAVL procedures in the stickies?

the sensor is there to adjust the throttle for you...if it isnt adjusting, the sensor is bad and all the advice in this thread applies

I can adjust mine in my driveway +/- 250 rpm. It does require some sort of OBDII software though.

I would suggest that to get effective help around here (and to avoid irritating too many people) that you try providing all of the information you have when you post - instead of making everyone guess what's wrong.

Try this: "The dealer says the tps is bad and will cost 800, here's what the car is doing - is it really tps? And if so, is there a way to adjust the idle to compensate or some other fix?"
