Wheel Bearing information

Ok guys need some help....

In my effort to redo my maxima frontend suspension.. the next step i'm doing is swapping out the wheel bearings.

I got a good deal on the beck/arnley bearings from advance auto parts which should be coming in tonight.

I was looking at some of the posts in the 4th gen and 5th forums which say there are bearing seals.

From the nissan schematics that i have i see the bearing between the front hub seal and another behind the bearing.

Anyone know part numbers for the seals? Advance doesnt have the seals so will have to hit the dealer. the hub seal is like $12 but i cant locate the name/information for the other.

Seals?

What are you talking about. Wheel bearings themselves cost about 75-100 a piece depending on dealer charge.

It cost me nearly $400 for parts and labor to get them pressed into the hubs.

hmm interesting... I know the dealer wants $90 for each bearing.

Advance auto has replacement bearings for the maxima made by Beck/Arnley for a little over $50.

I already spoke to the Service Advisor at the dealership. I'm going to take the knuckles/spindle out and take it to them. They will basically separate the hub from the knuckle/spindle, remove the old bearings and press in the new ones. I will get the knuckles/spindles back home and basically bolt it back onto the LCA, strut and tie rod and attach the axle and caliper. We already have a deal for $75 to do both bearings. If I had a press I would have probably done it myself.

The deal includes warranty on the pressing in of the bearing and lifetime warranty on the bearing itself.

hmm.. lets see total cost... 2 X 50 for bearings = $100... $75 labor to put it in ... and spending half a day undoing and hooking everything back up... just have to call some friends for a garage party ... not bad for under $200

Since you got the work done... do u have a list of the parts that were replaced? would appreciate it... so I know if i need anything more.

Don't get aftermarket bearings man. You're gonna be sorry for it I swear.

5th Gen bearings take A LOT of stress, you want something that will last.

Thanks for the heads up.

I need this car for a year more and i drive way too carefully.

With the warranty and knowing i do a lot of the work myself. I'd rather save the money....

However, do let me know if I am missing parts in my list... So far its only the bearing....

You do know how big Beck/Arnley is right? You do know that they are probably better then the OE ones, right?

I'll wait a week for your answer

Since you guys are talking about wheel bearings you might be able to help me.
When my 2000 Max gxe gets to about 35 40 mph I start hearing a low humming sound. I had my tires rotated to see if it was a tire issue and i still heard the sound. I started hearing the sound last weekend. I was wondering if it was a dry bearing.

I had a problem with that myself on my 01 (RIP). Use an onramp to see what side it's on, i.e if you are on a banking-right onramp, if the noise gets louder it's on the left side, if it gets softer or goes away, it's on the right side. At least then you know what side it's coming from. Though if it's a rear wheel it might be harder to detect because the front wheels take 90% of the force of the banking turn.
I found my problem was on the front driver-side wheel, and I acutally had metal shavings stuck to the grease around the hub. Not good. Though, it doesnt sound like your problem is that bad, if you only hear it at speed. Maybe a caliper is starting to go? If it doesnt release all the way you'd probably get a whirring sound as you go faster. Hope it helps
