Gutting intake manifold

I've seen some people mention it, but that's about it. Since I'm doing an engine swap (and I have time), I'd like to get a little info. about this. If it's practical to do (for a moron like me haha), I'd like to try it since I hear the gains are pretty good. Intake and exhaust are going on with the engine and I want to do w/e mods I can before it's all assembled.

Thanks

"gutting" usually refers to removing the variable intake mechanism. you will get high end gains but lose a lot of low end (which is why nissan designed it that way)

well, considering how much torque she already has in 1st, I'm not really concerned with that I guess. I shift at redline 90% of the time, so I doubt I'll notice that low end missing lol.

then its easy, remove the IM and remove the butterfly valve (similar to the TB)

a few I guess, more than 1 and less than 15 haha

I don't know, just sounded like a good idea to me. I'm all about more airflow

I bought a weapon R intake, so I'm hoping the filter is as good as they say (I know the quality probably sucks, but as long as it lets a bunch of air in), since that should allow for optimum flow with the manifold open.

Removing the power valve alone will do very little if anything at all....something else is required.

boring the **** out, so it's a larger diameter?

That can be done if I can find the right tools.

Something known as 'port matching' will help, I guess...But it's a PITA to do as you have to be very meticulous...it takes forever.

Look at this thread. Namely Post #24.

I know this is a little off topic but I'll have to say that just letting a lot of air in isn't always a good idea. Get something of more quality, something you can trust to keep your engine clean. Their foam filter is cheap. Its extremely easy to overoil and the plastic lip of the filter that the coupler clamps to gets soft and bends when you clamp the brace in it, thus creating a small air leak. I am much more satisfied with my AEM dryflow than that POS.

Yes I am. The link I posted earlier (and the post I noted) has pictures of it.

Here's the thread you're talking about: http://www.nissanclub.com/forums/eng...uestion-2.html

I figure the foam will degrade and be crap in a couple months, but it'll have to do till then. Engine + upgrade parts = One broke SOB that was already broke to begin with haha
I'll worry about a good filter then.

i'm halfway thru port matching my spare upper IM. Hopefully it will be done this summer. I'm keeping the valve and not removing the shelf. Just stock with matched ports. I'll see how it works late summer

i think gutted with aaron's spacers is the way to go. gutting obviously adds major high range, and the spacers dyno'd a fair increase in the low end, so you would end up with equal or more low end and a bunch more top end...especially if you have extended rev limit

I will also have the '05 manifold that comes with my new engine, and I'd like to use that (plus it would be easier for me to strip off and work on it, since my car is sittin at the shop).
Of course I'm gonna get told just to swap my old one on it and read the ****ing FSMs lol. Sorry, but me too weetarded to make heads or tails of some of that stuff when trying to compare.

Thank You, that helped immensely, there's enough info in there for me to do it.

I don't have an A/F controller, I'm interested to see how all this rigged **** runs haha w/o one. I'll get one when I scrape enough cash together. Perhaps then I will dyno and tune it. With that crap and hopefully an underdrive pulley, I hope to make you guys jealous of my rigged POS car's WHP lol.

I hope you get a abseline dyno before you dyno the porting.

Would still like to see a DJ dyno on these.
