Alright well, I'll start off with I bought the Injen for cheap so that is why I am using it in the first place. With all the talk of how it sucked ***** so bad, I decided since I'm not going to spend a fortune on trying to find a PR true CAI, I might as well make this one work and turn it into a true CAI.

What I Modified
-I first cut the support bracket off the intake piping that attaches to the super hot what I think is the thermostat housing (if this isn't correct, please correct me). How I have it secured is pretty ghetto using to coupler clamps to hold it to the battery tray. I figure since I have the poly motor mounts, the engine really isn't jerking around too much.

-I added a silicone 90* coupler to the bottom of the intake piping. Marked where this would put the new section and i cut a 3 1/4" hole under the frame rail. I then added a roughly 5" piece of 3" tubing to connect the new 90* coupler to the apexi filter in the wheel well.

-Today my final part came in and that is the heat reflective jacket that I have over almost the hole intake tract.

-3" 4-Ply Silicone Elbow --$30 shipped
-CIS Cool Intake Reflective Insulation Kit -- $45 shipped
-Piece of 3" steel tubing I had laying around --FREE...sorta

Let me know what you guys think, and please, is this a true CAI yet?

not sure yet... i havent beat on it yet since it was moved and has the shielding on it.. I guess i will find out on a day when it is 90*+ out here.

i do want to get it dyno'd soon. with the headers,spacers,TS l-spec and now the intake i need to get the **** tuned with the afc i put in last week. we shall see what the verdict is soon enough.

Now that i think about it, it still pulls very hard all the way to 7k...enough for me

what gains would i see with the advance in timing? i read it somewhere and couldnt find it again

 

Timing advance helps throttle response....no real power gains.

 

How do you plan on advancing your timing?

looks ghetto. i would rather take the long tubing off the injen to supposedly get more low end torque back rather than go through all that trouble just to make a "CAI." thats my current setup. to each his own though, do what makes u happy.

me too and you datalog so which is it that gives the most area? Stock, GAB, WAI? Didnt u gain like 11 whp from GAB?

 

I'm still at it. At the moment, stock airbox w/ a few goodies in between seems to be the quietest and smoothest feeling. But it is richer this way vs GAB/ &/or short cone intake. I have to take out about 8-12% correction using the SAFCII in order to get it to where it was prior to changing the intake.

I need to dyno this particular set-up.

this car is by no means a show car nor do i ever intend it to be... it is my daily whip... I've been building my other car for over a year and i am having fun screwing around with the maxima for a change.

That advance wont affect dynos very much. This has not yet been dyno proven, but I have never seen any affect on airflow to spupport any gains when advancing /retarding it. It only affects the timing map <2300. But for the love of maxima.org, don't start another thread asking about it, or bump an age old thread about it.

 

IMO I think once you open your hood to show your engine everybody is going to notice it right away and they are going to laugh.

 

WHO CARES......As long as it doesnt bother him, why should it bother you?

$350.00 is a lot of loot. Probably would've been better off shopping around for the PR.

You could've eliminated that 90* elbow by relocating your battery (free) and cutting a hole. The air is then forced up right into the intake due to the mud guard . Then again I've got a stillen front bumper so there is a big hole there.

 

He says he got it cheap.... How long did you have the injen on by itself?

 

I know what it does. But I would rather have it look decent than have it looking like you just wrapped your intake with tin foil.

about laughing at a car... i bet you are some of those people that laugh at primered junky looking cars... then it turns out to have 600whp, what do you say to that when im sure "what a hunk of $hit that it" went through your mind?

opening your engine bay for people to see is what ricers do when they hang out in the parking lot.
and its to show off their bling "mods" that look cool and shiny but dont really do anything (injen intake, red wire loom, etc, etc)

 

Sometimes I show the ricers my engine. Looks more stock than it did from the factory right now.

No engine cover, stock airbox.

And a Crown Royal bag to the side to wipe my oil off my dipstick when checking it since, right now, I appear to be one of the lucky ones.

 

besides my intake, my engine bay looks stock to the untrained eye. you cant see the spacers or STS
