need help...please stop laughing

it was a beautiful sunday. had the idea to change the oil in my G35. Everything was going fine until the silver foil sealer thing that appears when you unscrew the top of a new five quart oil container decided to ruin my day. Saw it go right down the funnel into the engine. About the size of a nickel. I tried flushing it out of the drain plug whole with about 10 more quarts of oil, but did not see it again. I really do not want to drop the pan and am wondering what my options are. by the way....please stop laughing.

thanks,

g

PS....at least it did not happen to my max

a small plastic/foil seal should not cause any issues... i see it easily broken apart by the valve train. there is a chance that it will clog one of the drains in the head, so as a precaution i would remove the valve cover and remove it.

if the foil manages to find its way back to the pan it wont cause any harm -the pickup screen will prevent it from recirculating into the top end again

don't feel too bad, i did my first oil change 2 weeks ago..pulled it off the ramp and it was leaking like a sieve, threw it back up and it dripped a little, couldn't figure it out for the life of me, turns out the ring seal from the previous filter was still on...DUH!!!!

oh well lesson learned

What irish44j said. Pull the valve cover. If it's on top, take it out. If it's not seen, put it back together and start praying.

As a side note, if you can't find it, cut open your oil filter next time you do an oil change and see if it's in there.

it can't be in there.
Like the other guys said take off your valve cover and install a new gasket after. Don't overtighten those 10 mil bolts cause they're screwed into aluminum Hand tight so it pushes it down.. And tighten them cris-crossed pattern starting with the middle towards the outsides so you can seat the gasket.
However i would do it cause you don't want passages blocked. We have replaced an engine actually a 3.5 and when we teared it down we found an oil filter packaging wrap blocking a passage starving the engine of oil. The guy did his oil changes at a small garage so that voided his warranty. So we did the engine and as soon as we discovered that the dude had to fork over the bill. Sad but for 10 bux more an oil change you'd better have it done properly and have warranty still.

Umm, how the **** does leaving that in there and letting the valvetrain "chew it up" seem like an ok idea?

Definatley fish that out. Pull the cover off. Imagine the cost of buying a new motor. That foil cover on the oil jugs is usually metal, and even if this one isn't that can cause damage either by blocking drains or breaking up as foreign material and gettting stuck in the pickup.

I hear ya with the panic thing, if I did that I woulda been flipping out too until everyone said it'll be fine just pull the valve cover etc.

One time I had the dipstick out to check the oil, wiped it and dropped the rag on the valve cover and actually saw some mini chunks of grit fall into the dipstick hole I ran inside and grabbed a q-tip and wiped every bit of it from inside the hole

Use an oil extractor, good way of an oil change as well as extracting any materials. It should look like this,

Its a good device for oil changes, simple, clean and quick.

Yep, I can write a DIY I did on my Integra but dunno if that fits into a Maxima board. I'm changing my oil that way now, much easier than getting under to release the drain bolt.
